Question Im new here..have IUI and RE ???'s

I am a 27 year old and have been ttc for 2 1/2 years. I found out after about 6 months that i wasnt ovulating, through a blood test with my ob/gyn. She started me on 6 months of clomid w/o success. a year later, i went to a fertility specialist she recommended. I had a consultation and put off treatment(thinking it would happen). In january 09' we began 2 rounds of IUI with clomid and ovidrel w/o success. In april, dr insisted he had been seeing fluid in my uterus and wanted to do a diagnostic laparascopy/hysteroscopy. He found some very mild endometriosis, adhesions, and a uterine polyp(caused from anovulation). He removed all with a laser and performed a d&c. I have had blood tests and HSG and all were normal. My husbands sperm analysis are excellent. May we did another round of IUI with 75 Bravelle inj. cd 5-14. The bravelle was supposed to increase estrogen, which it did, only on day 12/13 when it was supposed to peak, it took a nosedive. He doubled my dosage and salvaged the cycle. Had two follicles that looked great and proceeded. Still didnt work. then this week, i was talking with someone who is pregnant with twins through ivf, and had undergone several rounds of iui before. She used the same doctor i am going to and recommended me to find another doctor, or at least to not just do what they say, to research well. I feel like it is time to move on to the next step, but dont know if i am just getting antsy and wanting instant gratification. Anyone have a suggestion? also, I am not sure if my doctor is a reproductive endocrinologist. Would that be what a fertility doctor automatically does? I just feel like i kinda jumped into it and havent asked questions, just done as i was told.? im sooo confused as to what to do next.

Hi goldelox,

you can do a simple google search to find out what your dr's specialty's are and make sure you are seeing an RE. As for the other stuff i can't comment on cause we have not been able to get there yet and we will have to do IVF and not the IUI's. But i wanted you to know that someone was listening and i hope someone with advice on the IUI's gets back to you soon. Gook luck with your cycles and keep us posted

hi goldelox,

I would suggest first trying to research your doctor; maybe check his success rates on www.sart.org; or see if he's listed on www.ratemds.com.

Depending on what you find; that should help you in your consideration to stay with him or find a new practice. If you stay, then I'd take the PG woman's advice to heart; don't settle for what the doctors tell you. Try and educate yourself (or ask them to educate you) on the different options available and press for what you want. There's a handful of really great books out there that will give you good information without overwhelming you too much.

My story is similar to yours; I had the lap/hysteroscopy/D&C in October, followed by 3 failed IUI's this year. If I hadn't spoken up, I'd have done a 4th IUI and I didn't see the benefit. I was only getting 1-2 good follies a cycle; making slim odds even slimmer.

Even after I said I wanted to move on, my RE was trying to sell me on other options. I don't blame him; he was going on the assumption that a lot of people can't afford IVF and he was giving me cheaper alternatives. I told him what my insurance would cover and we agreed on IVF.

I don't think you're being unreasonable in any way. Let us know what you decide to do and good luck!
