Sperm Quality Post-Fever & Recovery Time
I had a recent BFN due to dh's sperm quality being diminished significantly after having the flu about 3 weeks prior for about 5 days. His initial count was 123 Million, and after the gradient wash, was only 11 Million with 38% Motility. Our last BFP IUI he had 56 Million with High Motility. I wish my RE had asked me if my husband had had a fever before we started this cycle, as I would have postponed the cycle. I thought that it wouldn't affect those sperm already produced, but may impact the quality down the road after the ones being developed were brought to full maturity. I was right & wrong...
I came across a great medical journal that indicated that the number of days the fever took place, would equally impact the sperm concentrations, motility & morphology (i.e. if the fever lasted 1 day, there would be a diminished sperm quality of 20%, but if the fever took place for 3 days, it would diminish by 60%!). Also, with regard to the recovery time afterwards, the article indicated that sperm concentrations were affected for up to 56 days after a febrile episode whereas sperm motility and sperm morphology only seemed to be affected up to 32 days after a febrile episode. So, to get nearly full quality back it would be ~56 days based on the specific stage of development impacted at the time of the fever. So, though I've read other posts on other sites that say 2 to 3 weeks, that's false. However, it had very little impact on those already mature, which could be from 0 to 8 days prior to sample...So, if your dh is currently ill at time of insemination, as long as he hasn't had that fever several days before that day, you may not see any impact on the little guys...Good to know, and only found one study/medical journal that gave this "scientific" information. So, thought I'd post to help anyone else that might be googling the same question... Here's the link to the article. Good luck with your upcoming BFP's!! http://humrep.oxfordjournals.org/cgi...ull/18/10/2089

Thanks Deepa...Just one of those things "I wish someone had told me..."
Thank you for your condolences on the BFN, too...I saw your post today, and you have my equal apologies, Deepa...IF SUCKS!! BUT...We need to focus on the BFP that is going to be...We gotta stay focused on that one, and we'll get through this... My dh is looking to see if he can get the 28th off work, since af just showed, to see if we can start another cycle right away, or if we need to wait until May (works really busy this month for him)...This is really crappy having to schedule around af & o to have a baby...I wish science would get out of my bedroom and my intimate affairs with my dh already...Jeepers! Anyway, I just wanted to wish you all my best, and I do know that our turn is coming...

failed ivf also
I recentl experienced this same thing, except my dh count was much lower to start 2ml .He had a fever 3 weeks prior of 103 for 3 days.No boby ever mentioned or asked about this until the day of ER .On his form he filled out ,it asked if he had a high fever.Well it was a little to late for that question,as I was in the operating room.Turned out he had 19 sperm ,not moving. Now were 12 thousand dollars in debt. But I still have Hope.

Adrianna,
My heart goes out to you and your dh! Were they able to freeze your eggs, at least, or did they give you the option of using donor? I told the clinic when they called with my beta results that they might want to consider asking this question during their consultations. They asked me if I had mentioned it to the doctor. I said no, but if I didn't believe it would have an impact, why would I have mentioned it? I'm not the doctor...Duh!! Anyway, I said with paying out-of-pocket, the physical impact and the emotional toll cycling has, it might be something they want to think about adding to their roster of questions. Especially, when the first question out of the lab tech's mouth, before even looking at dh's sample, was "Have you recently been sick?"...Then, when the results of the post wash were reported to us by the RE, his first questions to dh was, "Have you been sick recently?"! Anyway, she said she'd be sure to mention my suggestion to my RE...How nice... If it's any consolation, we had a cycle of IVF and even with dh's boys all in attendance, we had zero fertilization with ICSI. Later with an IUI had a BFP, so doctor can't explain our results, but there is hope kiddo. You hang in there, and if you ever need to talk, please feel free to pm me or post here. Take care, Adrianna... *********** Charity Me 36, DH 34 1st IUI w/CC Jul-06 - BFN 1st IVF/ICSI Oct-06 - No Fert 1st IUI w/Inj Jun-07 - BFPX2/MC 2nd IUI w/Inj Mar-08 - BFN 3rd IUI w/Inj May-08 TBD |

Thanks for the reply,Um..as far as freezing my eggs ,since they attempted fertilization, even though the sperm were not moving they gave us the option and at that point even if ther was the slightest chance ,I had them go ahead and try.So at that point we were not abble to freeze the eggs. All I could keep thinking is what a terrible waste of $$ of time and drugs that I am not crazy about going into my body. They did mention we could use donor next time ,but since I know my husband does have sperm,Id rather our first be from him although I am not opposed to future tries with donor. Its very difficult when you love everthing about your husband from the way he looks and talks and acts and cares. You just want so badly to reproduce him.I personally feel like I need to continue to try to boost sc before I opt. for donor. At the same time I totally understand why someone would want to go in that direction...Im just really focusing on finding the right ins. as of now.Ill keep you posted ,again thanks for caring adrianna

Adrianna...I totally understand the ds feeling, and you brought tears to my eyes when describing how in love you are with your dh. That's so very precious. You hold onto that, and you'll get through all of this.
There was a point after our first IUI that we discussed ds and came to an agreement that we weren't ready to take that avenue until we absolutely had to for the same reasons you put so eloquently. There is a thread that discussing companies with IF coverage "Companies that have insurance that assist in fertility treatment". I'm sure you've been there, but in case, wanted you to be aware. In the meantime, keep trying naturally, and please keep me posted on your progress. I hope things will just get better from here. All my best, Adrianna... *~* Baby Dust *~* Charity Me 36, DH 34 1st IUI w/CC Jul-06 - BFN 1st IVF/ICSI Oct-06 - No Fert 1st IUI w/Inj Jun-07 - BFPX2/MC 2nd IUI w/Inj Mar-08 - BFN 3rd IUI w/Inj May-08 TBD |
