Cone Biopsy and Cervical Mucus

Hello, I am writing to see if anyone else has encountered this problem...I am 40 yrs old, TTC 1 year, and I had a cone biopsy (aka conoscopy) done ten years ago for precancer of the cervix. At the time I did a lot of research and learned that this procedure can cause weakening of the cervix which can cause miscarriages. That was the only side effect that I discovered. Anyway, fast forward nine years later and I start TTC. I saw an OB and told her about my procedure, and also discussed TTC with my GYN who performed the surgery on me! No one said anything to me about any complications due to this. During this past year I have tried taking my temp, OV kits and even tried to gauge my cervical mucus. The weird thing was, I couldn't find any! I asked my infertility nurse about this and she just said, "oh, not everyone produces it". Well, finally after seeing my RE I learn that a cone biopsy often removes the glands which produce this mucus! And this mucus is very important! Not only does it help the sperm swim up the fallopian tube, but it also protects it from the acidity of the vagina. I asked my RE if this could be why I am not getting pregnant and he said, "Sure, it could be." WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE TELL ME THIS?!!!!!! I could have looked into this a year ago!! Apparently injections will help this problem which I will be trying in Sept but I feel like I wasted so much time!! And I am going to be 41 this winter. It's so aggravating!! Anyway, I am curious if anyone else has had this issue and if so, did the injections bring on the mucus?
Thanks, Sue

What kind of injections are you using? I have horrible CM as well, but we are doing IUI to make up for that.

I begin Gonal-F injections this week. I hope this is the answer!!! It's weird how many people I keep hearing have this issue yet it is so rarely discussed. Imagine if this was the only factor contributing to the IF?! I wish you luck.

I also don't seem to have any CM. I have mentioned it to my doctors and they just brush it off as no big deal but it IS a big deal if it is going to keep me from getting pregnant. We are doing IUI now but I have been told that CM is still important even with IUI. Is this true?

I don't know about that. I am hoping the Gonal F helps but I don't really understand the whole thing so I am not sure. I too found that my doctors and nurses blew it off. I don't get it.

SNS - is CM the only reason you will be taking the Gonal-F? I am not familiar with it.

Let me know if it works!

I had leap surgery for a abnormal pap 13 years ago and they did tell me that it could be a problem ( I was only married a month) so we had been trying for 13 years! with unexplained fertility. With many failed fertility treatments! Then last Oct. We got a huge shock! I was pregnant(with no treatments) and now I have my miracle son. I think personally that it was part of the stress of them telling me I could have a problem conceiving and when we adopted our daughter 1 year 10 months later, I got pregnant. I believe when I gave up (back to GOD) and was satisfied with never getting pregnant, being happy I had my dear daughter then and only then I got pregnant. That was the first time I ever (and I didn't think I could ever)! gave it up. Let me tell you, that is all I thought about night and day was to get pregnant. I know every one has a different fertility problem so I'm in no way saying that because you had surgery or any other problem...that this is the reason! It is just my story... maybe someone can relate. I am really sensitive to couples with infertility and know what your going through.
God Bless all of you and hope you too have your miracle baby!

I didn't have a cone biopsy, but I did have cryosurgery for the same thing, where they "freeze" the dead cells. My one GYN said I have a stenotic cervix (as a result of this stupid procedure) and I don't have much CM either. I am going to be using pre-seed, which is a "sperm-friendly" lubricant. There's one for the inside and one for the outside.

Boxer - I have been using pre-seed and my RE just told me that I should only use a very small amount and only if I HAVE to because even though it says it sperm friendly, it is better to use nothing at all if possible. I don't know if I believe her! How can that be true if the sperm can't even get to where they need to be? In fact, I don't know if I believe anyone about ANYTHING anymore! No dr. has the same answer and it's driving me insane!
