Metformin depletes Folic Acid
My doctor told me to start taking an extra folic acid supplement in addition to the prenatal vitamin I take. Now I am taking Bio B12 (with folic acid) b/c apparently metformin can really deplete folic acid in the body.

WOW! Did not know that!
I googled Metformin and Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) and found this:
http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsSupple...licAcidcs.html If I am on prenatals (Primacare One) does that counter the effects? The Primacare One site says each pill has 1g of Folic Acid...

Thanks for posting this link. Although I knew that Met depleted folic acid in the body, I did not know that I should not be taking it at the same time as my prenatals and B12 with folic acid!
My naturopathic doctor told me that it depletes folic acid so that I should take an additional supplement (in addition to my prenatal vitamin) so that if I get PG I have it built up in my body. I will now switch my Met to lunch time and keep taking my B12 with folic acid and my prenatal at breakfast. Thanks! |
