Laparotomy VS. Laproscopy

Hi!

I need to have an ednometriomal removed as well as a hydro before my first IVF. I have had 2 laproscopic surgeries before to remove my endometriomas.

The suggestion of one RE was to have the surgery done as a Laparotomy, insstead of Laproscopy, because there is less chance of doing damage to the ovarian tissue, and they can remove more of the cyst wall since they cna really get in there with ther hands. laproscopy relies more on pulling and tugging using pincers and clamps, etc... and is less precise.

Anyone heard this before? Also, what can be expected w/ recovery in terms of a laparotomy? I'm nervous about that.

Thanks!

Oh yes...it's not uncommon at all. I was warned before my previous laparoscopy that they might have to switch to a laparotomy if things looked worse than thought. The biggest thing with the laparotomy is that it is a large cut thru muscle which means a much longer recovery period and more pain. You would be looking at an inpatient stay in the hospital of a day or two and about a 4-6 week recovery time. The plus side is the it gives the surgeon more space to work as your doctor mentioned.

Most docs will agree to start the surgery as a laproscopic as long as you have given consent to open surgery if need be.....

Best wishes..

I have had two Laparotomy's..one for Endo and another this last Dec for a cyst on my ovary which ended in removal of one ovary and my tubes. I was fully recovered after my first one around 3 weeks and felt great. This last one I took about 3 months to finally feel "normal" but if your doctor thinks you should do the Laparotomy then I would do it. Good Luck!! Wishing you all the best!!
