How many extracurricular activities do you have your child involved in?

I'm in the process of working out our fall schedule. Tell me what you think?

Monday: school in am, Jake will have social skills group from 12:30-3:30

Tuesday: school in early am, music/art alternating weeks with my friend and her 3 kiddos in late am and lunch with them, nap for both kids, speech therapy for Jake, 1 hr social skills group from 4:30-5:30

Wednesday: school in am, nap in afternoon, take them swimming in late afternoon, piano at 5pm for 30 mins, church choir from 7-8pm.

Thursday: school in early am, Lydia has dance in late am for an hour, homeschool rollerskating every other week in afternoon, early evening Christian Youth Theater class

Friday: buddy day with Daddy & Jake in the am to go to the golf driving range or whatever, Lydia at preschool, Mommy gets down time 2-3pm homeschool PE class,

Saturday: 1 hr gymnastics class

Sunday: Sunday school for 1 hr.

He will also have soccer this fall if the practices fit into our schedule. It is kind of low on my priority list but it was one of the first things I signed him up for. If it works, great. If not, great.

He will also have 1:1 therapy time with his new therapist for our new perspective taking therapy program we are starting. She will work with him 10-15 hrs per week but about 1/2 of those will be within our activities and classes. The other 1/2 will be at home around the house.

It seems like a lot but OTOH I am homeschooling him because I want him to work on the social stuff. He will have some down time. And, he should see his time with his new therapist when they are at home as fun down time with his "buddy" as we are calling her. The evenings we are at home I plan to make very relaxing with dinner at home (minimal eating out) and lots of fun family time playing outside and whatnot.

What do you guys think? Too much? Not enough? Just right? I know it is hard to know since you don't know Jake but your input is still appreciated.

(BTW, I'm not worried about getting our academics done. I think that will be more than enough time at the pace he works at.)

We are planning the following:

Monday - gym (me) 9-1030, groceries, lunch, school, perhaps soccer practice (schedule is not out yet)
Tuesday - commute 30min, Homeschool co-op class (were going to do 2 but they are $$$), maybe the park/lunch/field trip, commute home
Wednesday - gym (me) 9-1030, school, lunch, Lindsay dance (Sean will do school/game/errands while we wait), school if needed, perhaps soccer practice
Thursday - gym (me) 9-1030, both kids gymnastics, lunch, school, perhaps soccer practice
Friday - gym (me) 9-1030, school, lunch, school, perhaps soccer practice
Saturday - soccer game Sean

There are a few field trips I have planned, and learned recently that we can get 1 person in free to several area museums on the 1st weekend of every month just by showing our Bank of America ATM card. If both adults go (we each have BoA ATM cards), we'd just have to pay for the kids.

There are many local parks, an indoor pool at my gym I can take them to, a nature center close by, the library, etc. that I can use to fill in the blank spots or spice things up. I know several other HS families and hope to make friends and have playgroups/playdates/etc. I think Sean needs more structure to get better at paying attention longer, being able to sit still, etc. so I will probably attempt to add more regular (and free if possible) activities into our day to keep him from seeking screen time.

It does seem like a ton to me, but you are the mom and know what is best for him and your overall family structure!

As for us....
Oldest DD will have her Commonwealth School that meets every Thursday from 9:00-2:45. These classes will include choir, Sword of Freedom (civil war era history), and Pyramid Project (a holistic approach to math and science). On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings she has early morning Seminary from 7-8 a.m., this is a religious class provided by our church in a separate building adjacent to the high school. She also has a weekly piano lesson on Wednesday evenings, and youth activities with our church on Tuesday evenings. There is also a large dance for youth in our area once a month, for youth ages 14+. She and her friends are always planning parties on the weekends too....they LOVE to get together!

Middle DD is in a Liberty Girls group this coming school year, which will meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. She also has piano on Wednesday evenings. Through our church she has activities with other 10-11 yr old girls twice a month as well on Thursdays.

Youngest DD is also in the Liberty Girls group, but with the younger age group (they are dividing it up into older and younger age groups), and will be the same time period on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. This is her main activity, other than playdates that will probably be at least a couple times a week.

As a family we attend church each Sunday for 3 hours, and also do other things together frequently such as swimming and rock climbing at the recreation center in town. Last year my two youngest DD's were in dance for second semester, but with a new baby coming in a few months I'm not committing them to anything more than is necessary. I know my limits as a mom being that I'm the taxi driver to most of these things! You can see that the older the kids get, the more they are involved in. That's just our philosophy and what works best for us.

I cannot be that "scheduled" as something always happens to put a wrench in it! but if it works for you the plan sound great!

Here are our extra activities. Monday nights-cub scouts, Tues- Girls on the run-mid afternoon, Wed (alternating weeks) Brownies, Church in the evening....hoping to get them in the childrens program with a helper for A-man, Thurs Occupational therapy in the morning (alternating weeks)- 4H, mid afternoon-Girls on the run. Sunday church.

Also add in a homeschool theatre group....not sure the exact morning yet. I'm hoping to start Z on the fiddle and A-man either on the drums or guitar...need to check into lessons.

Geesh I'M just tired looking at it. Homeschool fit around all that. We usually, depending on dh's schedule also do "school" saturday morning.

You tell 'em, girl!

And actually, I have a TON of pictures I need to put in a photo album that shall be labeled, "yes, homeschoolers DO socialize"....it documents a good chunk of the fun stuff we've done over these five years.

Lets see:
Monday: both kids have ballet, and twirling showteams. then DD also has tumbling show team (2 hours for DS and 3.5 hours for DD)
Tuesday: Karate and weapons training in karate. (about 2.5 hours)
Wednesday: Nothing right now
Thursday: Karate and self defence (3 hours)
Friday: nothing scheduled right now
Sat: Karate showteam. (2-3 hours)

If they were in any more activities I am not sure that they would have much time to breath. I think that they are going to be socialized enough. I am seeing that homeschooling them is allowing them to be in more then they would have been able to do if they were in PS.

Wow! That is a full schedule! Like you, we have activites everyday. All of our kids are involved in music lessons, theatre, church and sports. It's crazy!! We school in the AM, and have activies in the PM. I also take my kids to work with me, on the afternoons I work.

Our schedule is very full., I do think we are able to do many more activities, because we hs. More activities, mean more time to socialize! I think one of the greatest benefits of all the added activities, is that the kids are able to support eachother. They aren't divided into peer groups, without seeing eachother all day long. They learn to work together, and support eachother in their various activities. We try to make sure that we schedule activities, so we can attend everything as a family(or as I sometimes call us...a traveling circus). HS really works against sibling rivalry, and fosters true friendships within the family.
