I am doing math, phonics, writing, and reading with him in a fairly structured sense about 2-3 days a week....unless we have too much going on, then it maybe once. I got him some of the Magic School Bus videos and books and he loves them. He especially loves the human body one so I bought him an anatomy book which is too advanced for him but he loves to look at the pictures and discuss it with me. It had a poster in it that is now hanging on his closet door. I hear him telling Lydia often, "Lydia, this is the digestive system. First the food is in your mouth, then you chew and swallow it and it goes to your esophagus, then into your stomach, then into your small intestine, then into your large intestine, then you POOP IT OUT IN THE POTTY!! Ha ha, chuckle chuckle. Oh, and look, Lydia, those red things are muscles...they pull but don't push. And this is the blood system. These are the red blood cells that carry energy and these are the white blood cells that fight the green things that are germs and these platelets here, they form a scab on your scratch." LMAO!! His doctor mommy is so proud!
I bought him a solar system put together kit thing b/c he is so interested in the solar system right now from Magic School Bus book.
Oh, and he has learned some Chinese from watching Ni Hao Kai Lan and counted to 10 today in English and Chinese for his OT. She thought he was pulling her leg but then figured out he was serious and right.
He is reading well for me and I am obviously reading a lot to him.
We've been to listen to a local jazz band and the Kansas City Symphony.
We've introduced so much PE wise that it is crazy. He's learned to swim freestyle the length of the small pool that his lessons are at. Today he learned the breast stroke. He has also learned to swim underwater, dive, etc. He learned how to cast a fishing pole this weekend while we were fishing at my parents' cabin. He's learning basketball on our new basketball goal that goes down to 6ft for my pee-wee.
We visited a harvest garden and he got to see all the different food growing.
He is very interested in US states so we talk a lot about them and we have a US map up with all the states we've visited marked.
We're writing in his journal about all the cool stuff we are doing.
He is doing social skills group and has playdates with another little boy with high functioning autism weekly.
He is relaxed, happy, singing, dancing, enjoying life, he LOVES learning and is a joy to teach.
When Sept comes I'll start spelling and some art and add more substance to our music lessons. He is going to do soccer, gymnastics, HS PE class, piano lessons, church choir, perhaps some acting classes, and lots of playtime in addition to his more formal studies.
I guess I'm just so excited to see him being willing to sit down and work on the three R's with me and also be very self directed in his learning and interest in science in particular but also social studies and enjoying his PE stuff so much.
I think this is PERFECT for him!!
