Thrombophilla and Pregnancy - When do u see the hematologist?

Just got positive betas last week. I'm on lovenox and baby asprin. what's the next step? How do I manage this properly? Hematologist I saw a year ago that diagnosed me said to see him by 8 weeks. 8 weeks pregnant or 8 weeks after the positive? Do you see high risk OB's?

I'm just not sure waht to do exactly. I had one pg that mc'd very early, never ended up goign to the hematologist (Dr. waintraub).

Thanks.

I'm not sure what Thrombophila is but I have ITP (Ideopathic Thrombocitopinia Pupura) which is a platlete disorder. Although my ITP came on post-partum from my last pg, my hematologist told me if I ever wanted to get pg again to call him as soon as I found out I was pg so we could discuss a treatment plan.

I would call your hematologist and ask him/her when they want to see you. I know my practice has a hematologist on staff that specializes in pregnancy. She's not an OB but she works with your OB and/or Perinatologist to help manage your pregnancy and hematological issues. Maybe yours does, too.

Good luck!

I think it all depends on your history and what markers for the thrombophilia you have. My cousin has it and got a clot (before having children) so she see's a hemotologist. She's on coumadon when not pregnant and did lovenox when trying and actually pg.

I got tested b/c of her, got a positive diagnosis BUT different markers than her, had one m/c and then saw a hemotologist. He ran a bunch of tests, said "take a baby aspirin and extra folic acid daily for the rest of your life, and hopefully I'll never see you again."

For my pregnancy I just see a high risk OB (Maternal Fetal specialist) and he is awesome. I have another friend with clotting issues who managed it all with her regular OB and only saw the high risk guy at 20 weeks.

Again, it's really based on your markers and your comfort level. If you feel like you want to see a hemotologist, it won't hurt you! He's probably not going to change your treatment. But if you are happy with your OB and current course of treatment, then relax and enjoy your pregnancy!

Yes, go call your OB ASAP! You want to be on a strict regimen which is obviously dose dependent. You need to be at a therapeutic dose. Please call them soon.

Hey Diet, what did you end up doing? I have a clotting disorder. I've met with all my doctors and they have all told me a plan. I am supposed to see my hemotologist and be on Lovenox, which I am currently on. Then I also have a perinatologist. I would think that when they said they wanted to see you when you're 8 weeks, I would assume that would mean when you were 8 weeks along. Depending on how severe of a clotting problem you have, some OBs will manage you without you having to see a hemo. You should ask your OB and see what they recommend. Keep us posted!!

Actually i'm in a bind right now. I met with my new ob, high risk place. They wanted to take me off of lovenox. I went to the hematologist a day later, he yelled at me and refuses to let me get off. Here's the deal, I am homozygous C for MTHFR, I have a very low plasminigen level (the stuff in the body that breaks clots up when they form) and I have tested positive for lupus anticoagulant, and negative on another test. OB says that means its negative. Hematologist says its there but can be 'floating' around. He sais the low plasminigen is very rare, and he wants me on lovenox bc it can't hurt. Right now i'm still takimg it but when i go to the ob next week, I have to break it to them, or change practices.

LOL yeah, you gotta be able to get those doctors to agree. Thats the hard part. I have no advice for you on that one. Just do the best you can and do what you feel is best for you and the baby. Good luck and keep us posted!!
