Ecogenic Bowel

Hello all! I am 15 weeks pregnant. During my 11th week, I had the nuchal fold test. I am 33 yo and my odds came back at 1 in 1248 (same odds as a 22 yo). Needless to say, my DH and I were thrilled. I went to my peri (I go to one due to a potential incompetent cervix) for the quad screen test and the 15 week anatomy scan. Everything went well except that they detected an Ecogenic Bowel, which is a marker for downs. At my age, that test gives me a 1 in 90 chance, a far cry from 1 in 1248. I'm very concerned and wondering if anyone has ever had their doctor pick this marker up.

Any words of wisdom is much appreciated!

Hi,

I had something similar happen to me with my last pg. I had the first tri scan (nuchal fold test) and bloodwork and it showed that my chances for downs and tri 18 were 1 in 7000+. DH and I were very relieved. A few weeks later, I went for the triple screen. The clinic accidently ran a quad screen. My risk for tri 18 came back 1 in 50 (or something like that). I was freaking out.

My doctor explained that this was an error...that I never should have had the quad screen, that if the First Trimester Scan and bloodwork is good, then the quad screen isn't required. They should do a triple screen, but not the quad screen. My results, therefore, were skewed because I was being compaired with women who had failed the first trimester scan/bloodwork when I had not failed it, making my results completely null and void. I'm not sure if I've expressed myself clearly or not....I hope this makes sense. My biggest point, if you had the first tri scan come out clear, you probably shouldn't have had a quad screen done at all and yoru resutls are probably not reliable.

I would love to tell you not to worry, but if you are like me, you will worry. Ask your peri to do a few more u/s and check for some other markers. Mine did that for me adn they all came back negative and my son is healthy and fine. I hope the same thing holds true for you.

I'm sorry this happened to you and I hope everything works out in yoru favor.

Good luck.

My nuchal translucency test showed a NT that was 4.4mm and septated and ascites and that there was a 1 in 10 chance he had a serious chromosomal abnormality. (And I am 26) We had the amnio and everything came back perfect. The NT disappeared. So, at lot of these test cause a lot of worry for nothing. Sometimes, I wish I never had some of these tests done. Remember, your baby only showed 1 soft marker-the likelihood of a problem is very slim.
