uterus small????
I'm 26wks 5 days and the Dr. measured my belly today as 25wks. The baby, however, is in the 80th percentile for weight (2 lbs 4oz). A lot of people comment on how small I look - - I am small in general, have gained 16 lbs and now weight 134. Does anyone think it is significant that my belly is a week and a half behind? Thankfully, the baby is a good size. Does anyone know how to do this measurement at home so I can try to stay on top of my growth? (The dr. did it quickly w/a tape and I wasn't sure where so started the tape and stopped it.)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Cynthia

Cynthia,
If your baby looks healthy and u/s has him/her measuring proper growth, I wouldn't sweat about an external "uterus" measurement. This is a general way Drs measure "growth"--it was started long before u/s and can provide guidelines, but again, a good level II u/s is more accuraye than the tape. That being said, if you want to measure on your own, start at the base of your pubic bone and measure to the top of your uterus (you should be able to feel it)

Cynthia,
Ditto to what April has already said...the most important measurement is that of your baby who sounds to be doing perfectly!

I work Labour and Birth and with a Perinatologist. Belly measurements are notorious for being inaccurate. It is very dependent on the position of the baby so just puts you in a ball park.
If your scan says the baby is a good size and you have enough fluid (your doctor would tell you if you didn't) you should not worry. Try to relax and enjoy your pg, it will go by very quickly. Beth ttc #2

I'm 26 weeks also and have only gained 14lbs. My Dr. didn't seem concerned at all, he said I was right on track. I'm small to begin with. The baby is kicking away and tomorrow is our next U/S & echocardiogram with our peri.
Since my Dr. wasn't concerned, (they haven't even really been measuring my belly much), I'm not concerned. I don't think I need to be worried. So I wouldn't worry about the tummy measurements, I think a lot of Drs. don't even do it anymore. As long as the baby seems ok and you're eating, everything is probably good. -Katie |

I just wanted to add another reassuring post for you..
I am measuring 2 weeks behind based on my uterus size also. The OB was not concerned in the least. She said as long as the growth is consistent everything is fine. I've been "consistently" measuring two weeks behind. Baby IS measuring small, but absolutely perfect and OB says he is probably small for gestational age because me and DH are both very short/small boned. |

Hi Cynthia -
Just checking in. I see a group of OB/Peri's and some measure but most do not. They are doing growth scans for me and since they have u/s measurements of the baby and amniotic fluid levels they are not worried about the external measurements. I wouldn't worry if your scans are looking good. 16 lbs at 25 wks sounds OK to me. I would make sure you keep up the weight gain as much as you can if you want to nurse - you need some padding to help that along. 25 to 35 lbs is the recommended gain and you sound like you are on track! Did you find out the gender? -Wendy -31 wks |
