Please help, SCH, when does spotting stop? (xpost)
Hello,
I have had bleeding/ spotting since 5w1d and am currently 11w0d. I have a SCH which was very large and is still there but about half the size. I am still spotting brown, often heavy spotting and can never have a day where I don't. If you had a SCH, when did the spotting stop? How long did you spot and how long did you have a SCH? I am so worried and hope to get some info. TIA!

Hi,
I would strongly urge you to speak to your OB and ask to be referred to a Peri. If you are already seing a Peri, tell him/her that you'd like to have an immune panel run, particularly to test for one of the APA's (antiphospholipid antibodies). Most SCH's are reabsorbed by the body relatively quickly and don't linger generally this long, though it DOES happen. SCH's are caused by suboptimal implantation by the baby and APA's are most often at the root of that issue (and it can be treated). If you are tested and not found to have an immune issue, at least you will have the peace of mind knowing that you were tested. Additionally, you should speak to your doctor and ask about taking a coarse of antibiotics to guard against potential infection for the prolonged spotting. I did experience spotting for 11 straight weeks in pg #1 and know a few people around here (hey, Flexney) that also had prolonged spotting. I know its hard, but just continue to take it as easy as possible. Hugs, Jillie

Wish I had an answer; just posted this on another board:
"Hi Everyone,
I haven't posted on this board (or this site) before today, so if you don't recognize my moniker- that's why. My problem is that ever since I had a Chorionic Villus Sampling procedure at 10 weeks, I have been bleeding, and it has caused a fairly large subchorionic/retroplacental hematoma. I know that many women develop these bleeds for no apparent reason, and also that many women undergo CVS without this complication, so I'm not particularly blaming the physician or the test for my problem. What is somewhat mystifying though, is why it is so persistent. I am now at 13 1/2 weeks, and after an initial changeover from bright red to dark brown (after about 3 days), the amount of daily blood has been about the same - about 2 liners' worth most days. And the size of the hematoma grew considerably between the initial ultrasound, done 4 days after the CVS, and one I had 4 days ago. After the first U/S, I was put on pelvic rest and told to "stop lifting and take it easy." After the second, I was put on bed/couch rest with BR privileges. There has been NO DIFFERENCE in how much bleeding I have everyday, bedrest or not. I have been told to try drinking raspberry leaf tea by a friend who is into herbal medicine. Since I didn't find anything to suggest it would be harmful, I tried it, but it too hasn't made any difference. Has anyone found anything through their own experiences that might help? I'm willing to try anything, within reason. Also, just out of curiousity, how many of you on this board have had a retroplacental hematoma (blood between the uterine wall and the placenta)? Did you miscarry? Did you have a premature delivery? Did the baby develop normally after delivery? I'm most worried about giving birth to a 28-29 weeker and then suffering through months of agony and years of wondering if he'll ultimately be normal or not." As you can see, the anxiety is exactly the same, even if the cause is a bit different. I'm guessing that no one has any answers, but lots of women have had the problem. The only data I can find when I look this up in OB textbooks and OB journals have to do with average risk of m/c or preterm delivery (between 15 and 40% of the time, with higher risk based on size/location of the bleed, the timing during pregnancy, and maternal age). Best wishes, Andrea |

Neurodoc,
I had a SCH in both of my twin pgs. Mine was due to immune issues, which were treated with heparin in pg #2. In pg #2, my bleeding, which started out as lots of bright red stuff, transitioned to brown spotting and then stopped all within a 10 day span. Obviously, the less bleeding the better it is for your pg. Many women have bleeding/spotting throughout their pgs and have no complications whatsoever. I, however, was not so lucky and developed additional complications (infection, preterm labor and then PROM) due to my bleeding/spotting. I delivered those twins at 21wks and they passed away after a few hours. I did a little research into SCH's and found that the longer the bleeding continues, the worse things *can* be (note its not a guarantee). Bleeding that goes into the second trimester increases the chances for a bad outcome. I was told to bedrest until 48 hours after the bleeding stopped and was given an Rx for antibiotics. The blood is an irritant to the uterus, can cause infection, which in turn, can cause ptl and PROM. It is imperative that you be monitored carefully for those complications and treated with antibiotics, too. Babyluv...whoa!!! I had no idea you were even pg...CONGRATS!!! Do you still have my email address? If so, drop me a note and let me know how you and the new baby to be are doing (and also how your DD and DS are!!). Jillie
