Can anyone recommend a good book?

I'd like to find a book that covers the science behind IVF and what the latest protocols are (particularly for low responders or women over 40). Good coverage of egg donation would also be a plus. Any suggestions?

I don't know about books though I am sure some ladies on this board can recommend some good ones. Have you checked out the welcome thread there are some good websites to check out.

This isn't the book you're looking for exactly - but it's chock full of information about IVF and ART (and critical of multiple births like Kate Gosselin and the Octomom): Liza Mundy's "Everything Conceivable." She's a writer for the Washington Post. We did an interview with her at work (this was 6 months before I got my dx) and I found that what I'd learned just from reading her book made the process more understandable.

I have a wonderful book that saved my life when I first started. It is "the infertlity survival handbook" everything you never thought you'd need to know by elizabeth swire falker. She suffered with IF and did gosh probably 4-6 ivf's and is just very blunt in this book.

Not sure it covers a bunch of protocols but it is very good and full of info.

I liked In Vitro Fertilization - The ART of making babies by Geoffrey Sher. It wasn't patronizing about age (much) like some of them are and had a lot of very practical, very detailed information.

I also like A Few Good Eggs by Julie Vargo & Maureen Regan - it was my first book and I'm glad I read something funny rather than "sensitive". I don't really like super-sensitive, touchy feely books about someone else's particular journey - at least not for informative reading.

This looks interesting Navigating the Land of If: Understanding Infertility and Exploring Your Options by Melissa Ford - but I haven't read it - her blog is good though.

As for up-to-date protocols - the internet will always trump the written word here. I have a bunch of research sites that I check out now and again and there are a few journal from which you can buy articles if interested (Fertility & Sterility is a big one).

And the forums - there is a type of person who "just doesn't want to know" what's going on and then there is the consummate researcher. Dig around the various forums and you will find a lot of very up-to-date, educated people that you can get information from (either by lurking or by actually participating).

I'd love to see what you come up with!

Oh - I didn't really much like The Couple's Guide to IVF - most of the stuff was in The ART of Making Babies.

Thanks for the ideas! To add to the list, I've been reading "Budgeting for Infertility" by Sterling. Obviously, it's focused on how to afford all this, not the science so much. I find the book very useful; but DH tends to call it "that book about how you're going to go broke making babies."

Conquering Infertility by Ali Domar is my favorite IF book. It helps with the emotional side of things. I also liked the Infertility Handbook that TNA mentioned, although it is blunt as far as DOR/FSH, but keep in mind it was written a few years ago.

How to Get Pregnant by Dr. Sieber was helpful with specifics of ART. It is very scientific in going through the process of IVF. Check the library as I found over 20 books on Infertility.
