? about Snape and the Defense Against the Dark Arts class

It's always said throughout the book (rumors among students) that he wants the job really badly, but hasn't gotten it. Never once has he said he wants it or even acts like he does...so where and why did this rumor start?

In OoP, when Snape is being interviewed by that toad-lady (can't think of her name...the DADA teacher in book 5) she notes that he has been applying for the position of DADA teacher since he arrived at Hogwarts and he says that is true.

Could it be so that he can keep brushing up since he needs an awful lot of protection if he's truly turned 'good' from being a death-eater?
