My theory...

It is still in progress, but I wanted to share something that hit me the other day when we were discussing who the half-blood prince might be. I have noticed that the second part of the title in all of JKR's books is a catalyst for change in Harry's life, but never a huge player in that particular book.

Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone: The stone isn't a major player in the book, but Harry's interest in it and subsequent protection of it are a major turning point in his life (beginning of learning about himself/Voldemort).

Chamber of Secrets: The chamber again isn't the big aspect of the book, but rather what is inside it and what Harry discovers about himself (Parselmouth) and Voldemort (Tom Riddle) and the similarities, etc.

Prisoner of Azkaban: Sirius is talked about a lot in the first 3/4 of the book, but he isn't really the topic, by his breaking out of Prison, Harry learns more about who really betrayed his parents and again, more about himself.

Goblet of Fire: The goblet triggers a major change in Harry's life in having to advance his wizarding techniques and putting him face to face with old Voldy and again...learning more about his parents, etc.

Order of Phoenix: Harry's parents were in the original Order and with the organization of the second OoP, it triggers the fight against Voldy is back on.

Again...this is in the rough stages, but I'm leaning toward the Half-Blood Prince NOT being a major player in this book, but someone who helps Harry learn more about himself and his parents. It opens up more possibilities for WHO could be the HBP. Anyway...going to go find that life I somehow lost track of...

LOL!

I think you're right on in what your saying. My question is not so much who HBP is, buy WHY is he a factor in Harry's life? Is he friend or foe, help Harry out of trouble or cause Harry trouble, etc... If he's a friend, maybe he will help Harry learn more about himself, his past, what happened to Sirius, how to defeat V, etc. If he's a foe, Harry may learn all these things in trying to combat a new enemy.

So much to think about!

Interesting theory Christine. I really never thought about it that way, but it certainly brings up some very good points.

hmmm... interesting theory Christine, and quite true too!

Now this has gotten me thinking that the HBP cannot already be an integral part of the series already, now can he??

Amen to that!! i've spent the last week re-reading Goblet of Fire AND Order of the Phoenix and seriously considering re-reading Chamb. of secrets to get "clues"....i've forgotten how HP obsessed i can be. (sadly as i type i'm watching Prizoner of Askaban on HBO )
I'm starting to think more and more that the HBP really won't be what we're thinking either....the most well known halfbloods are Voldemort and Harry. Seamus-pure, Neville-pure, Malfoy-pure and all Slytherins of course, All the weasley's-pure, Hermione--muggle, Dean--muggles.....
It's got to be a new character. Any ideas on a defense against dark arts teacher yet?? You know we-and half the world-should just wait and read the book! It's driving us nuts....LOL!
