Exercise every day. Even a slow walk around the block is better than nothing. Some ladies love swimming laps daily. Kepp that up through your pg and afterwards.
Do not skip snacks. getting too hungry leads to bad food choices.
Eat everything you are supposed to each day--don't skip out on parts of a meal.
Check your blood sugar faithfully and take the records to your appts eat time.
have the number of a nurse at your OB's office to speak with any time you have a question
Look for warning signs of problems developing: Hyperglycemia (High blood glucose) - American Diabetes Association
Hypoglycemia (Low blood glucose) - American Diabetes Association
be aware of unusual swelling, increased blood pressure and an other changes in how you normally feel.

As for alternative treatments, that is a plan you will need to discuss with your OB. Controlling gestational diabetes is different than "regular" diabetes so some things may not be interchangeable as far as treatment goes. While pg is not the time to be trying out different things IMHO
