New here...

Hi all...
I was a member of this group long ago when struggling with infertility. I have been blessed with a one year old daughter and am now due in May with a second daughter, both pregnancies following infertility treatments.

Today, of course (as I am posting here!) I learned I have GDM. Ugh. I have read alot of the posts and once again am glad of the support (and now the food ideas)!

Just wanted to introduce myself. I see alot of this group was from last September, anyone going through it with me now?

Thanks...Heather

Hi Heather,

I'm here at 30w and monitoring only. I haven't been put on insulin (yet).
Did you have GD with your first dd?

Hey Cheryl,
No I escaped last time. I think probably because I threw up constantly through the whole pregnancy, right until the end. This time I stopped throwing up about a month ago. I think I would rather be throwing up again

I hope I can avoid insulin too. I go next week for the instruction but I have already started the diet, they gave me the carb guidelines. I cut back on sugar as soon as I failed the 1 hour, and I officially started the diabetic diet yesterday. I have been feeling starved ever since and I was up all last night with a headache. Is that normal? I hope I get used to it!

I have only gained 6 lbs so far, and I felt like I was eating well. This is a frustrating thing. Have you felt like that or do you get used to it?

Thanks for the answer...not much longer now, I guess!

I answered your other thread too - I hope you get more people to respond. I'm pretty new to this.

I never actually threw up in pg, just came down with nausea that only carbs could control. Now I'm dealing with gallbladder attacks/pains that ended me in the ER the other day. Lucky me, now I get to balance gallbladder diet with gestational diabetes. My appetite has not come back yet, so that makes it a bit easier. It would be harder if I were hungry all the time and then not able to eat.

I don't follow the diet exactly - I don't eat the nighttime snack because as soon as 8:00 p.m. arrives, my stomach shuts down and I'm just not hungry. So far my fasting numbers have been good so I haven't had to force myself to eat at night.

I don't eat anything with sugar in it right now. My carb choices are pretty simple. I eat Ezekiel bread, potatoes (only at night though - hashbrowns in the morning do not work for my sugars), veggies and beans (pinto, garbanzo, etc), cereals also only in the afternoon. My diet is really limited right now because I really do not want another gallbladder attack.

I gained 30 lbs from Sept - Jan mostly because of carb eating to avoid nausea, but since Dec, I've lost 7 lbs in Feb due to gallbladder, so I'm up now by 23. I lost weight by not eating due to gallbladder, not that I was trying to not eat.

I agree that it is a bit frustrating and probably more so now for you since you're also not feeling well. I hope that your doctor/dietician can figure out something that works a lot better for you. I might be tempted to go back to eating a 'normal' day's worth of food for you to see if that gets rid of the headache/nausea. That way you can report to the doctors that it really is the diet structure and not m/s returning in trimester #3.

Hey Cheryllyn,
How is your gallbladder pain? I tried the atkins diet shakes and they are ok. Lots of protein, very low carbs. I can't ever think of enough protein to add to meals, I'm not a big protein person (probably why I have diabetes...I always have been big on carbs) so I'm still looking for things to add.

I've tested a few times and so far all the numbers are ok so I feel alot better. I will just keep following this diet until the appointment and hopefully all will be well. When is your due date, early May? And is this your first?

I buy a rice protein powder from the local co-op. It has 12 grams of protein in 1 T and no carbs. I use this a lot for my snack time. I am not able to eat dairy or soy, eggs or bacon or any fatty meat. I'm not a fan of eating chicken for breakfast. So far it goes down OK. I never had trouble thinking of carbs to eat.

Gallbladder has been doing OK but I've been staying away from more than 5 grams of fat per meal.

I am due in May and yes, this is my first.

I'm off to visit my acupuncturist.

Sounds like you have a good plan in place until your appt.

Any time I feel sorry for myself I'll look at your strict diet. I'm really not sure what there is left to eat for you!! I'm sorry. Hang in there.

South Beach bars taste ok, too, by the way.

So far I have discovered that my numbers are very stable after lunch and dinner, but will go up easily in the morning. My fasting number is usually ok but is sometimes weird. Today it was even higher than my 1 hr post dinner last night, and since I ate dinner late I didn't have a snack after. I can't figure that out.

Well thanks again for all of the info. I hope things go well for you!

My numbers sound like yours. I have to be very careful with breakfast and morning snack, a bit looser at lunch and seems I can eat lots of carbs for dinner. I think that makes it easier because we can have some of those nummy carbs - just later in the day. I've been able to eat a waffle with syrup for dinner, light on the butter! I also add some granola for the afternoon snack on my yogurt. I found a 0% fat yogurt with 23 grams(!) protein and 4 grams carbs per serving. I'm going to try that out this afternoon with a little bit of granola and I use agave syrup for sweeteners - it's one of my favorite snacks.

Do you know what kind of yogurt that is? I found a low carb diabetic yogurt that's ok but I don't think it has that much protein in it.

Stoneyfield Farm OIKOS plain yogurt. http://www.stonyfield.com//ourproducts/GreekYogurt.cfm

They probably have others than the no-fat kind.

I love using yogurt on potatoes, but now I can only have small amount of potato at dinner time.
