Question How long?

Hi everyone:

My name is Christine and I am new to FT. I am 41 and have one miracle child, my 3.5 yo son. I also have 5 angel babies. I am a type 1.5 diabetic and manage my diabetes well with the help of insulin. After much heartbreak over several m/c (all 1st trimester some with heartbeats detected and some not) and nothing found in my OB's testing we were sent to a RE who specializes in multiple m/c's. She has been wonderful. Turns out I tested positive for MTHFR - homozygous positive for C677T. My Homocystine level says <10. Not sure what that means yet.

I am and have been taking for a few weeks now 1 low dose aspirin per day and 2 folgards per day. I am to take lovonex injections once I get a positive home pregnancy test.

The only thing I don't know at this point is how long I need to be on the folgard before we can start trying again... clock is ticking. LOL

Additionally, folgard is not covered by my insurance. 1mg folic acid tablets are. Since I have to take this the rest of my life... can I take 4 1mg folic acid tablets plus b6 and b12 and my prenatal instead of the folgard? Or can I take 4 of the OTC folgards which have 800mcg's of folic acid and are a bit cheaper. 30 pills of folgard cost me $30! So $60 a month... yikes! I don't mind taking the extra pills but wanted to check before I have my doc fight to get folgard covered... which I may do anyway but it takes several weeks to see if I can get the exemption.

Thanks so much for all replies!

Best to all,
Christine

Christine, have your OB or RE prescribe Neevo prenatal, it has a better absorbable form of folate for those of us with MTHFR. The Neevo should take the place of 1 Folgard. The reason why we have to take such high amounts of folic acid is because the body doesn't metabolize it with the MTHFR mutations - the folate contained in Neevo is already broken down for us and it's all better absorbed by the body. Another thing you can do is check to see if your insurance will cover Metanx instead of Folgard. I had the same issue as you did, they wouldn't cover Folgard and kept insisting I take regular FA. Then I got a Rx for Metanx and they covered that - again because Metanx contains the broken down folate (like Neevo) and it's not considered regular folic acid.
