Does MTHFR mean the baby gets zero folic acid?
warning: pg, child, success mentioned
Those of you that have the MTHFR gene, did you or have you delivered a healthy baby before you were diagnosed? I was just told I'm a carrier of the gene and have been doing research. (our DD was born prematurely & was IUGR due to placenta defiency-the cause now known to be MTHFR) I am at a loss as to how our girl was born without neural tube defects or Downs, etc., if my body didn't metabolize folic acid like it was suppose to. With my MTHFR gene, she got zero folic acid inutero? Also, I'm reading how the MTHFR gene causes recurrent m/c yet I've never experienced that (we are 7 1/2 unexplained). Is it possible this gene interferes with implantation? Perhaps we have fertilized eggs every time but they always fail to implant? But that contradicts why I would have success with our first IVF... Can anyone offer insight?

Cali,
Congrats on your dd! I'm sorry she was born premature. Thankfully she wasn't born with any defects. How is she doing now? You don't mention do you have 2 copies of the mutation, 1 copy. There are various forms and more info. on some of the other threads. I had two full term pg. (including a twin pg.) before knowing I had one copy of the C677T mutation and really no problems to speak of. We have been trying for over 3 years now with one loss in 07 before I knew I had the mthfr. I also have advanced maternal age now also and other immune issues. |

I requested a copy of my lab report and it turns out I have one copy each of c677t and a1298c. So I guess I'm compound hetero and after reading previous posts I find that is next to the worst.
I'm guessing my body was able to provide her with some folic acid otherwise she would have been born with NTDs. I still wonder if that's the cause for our infertility since we are unexplained.... I"m so sorry for your loss. Considering she was born 5wks early, our dd is doing very good. 9wks and almost 9lbs now! |

Cali,
Thanks re: loss. I figure I've beat IF 2x already so maybe I'm pushing my luck but we'll see. That's good she was only 5 wk early and she is doing so well. I also have some other mutation that can cause clotting. I will be on lovenox post O and I'm on baby aspirin and extra folate my next ttc. IF you do ttc again I would definitely see a hematologist or high risk OB to make sure you are getting enough folate and get on baby aspirin and ask for the lovenox. Good luck! |
