MTHFR - has anyone tried these? L-Methylfolate
I found this vitamin combo which contains L-Methylfolate, such as in Metanx. As you may know L-Methylfolate is a more natural form of folic acid and it's easier for those of us with MTHFR to metabolize. I'm wondering if any of you have tried this brand of vitamin instead of folgard or metanx and how you liked it? Since it is OTC the doses are much lower and you have to take like 4-6 of them. I'm asking my doc for a Metanx Rx, but thought I'd try this until that comes through.

SWO, any comments now that's it's been five months?
I write this for my benefit and others. All the articles I reference are published within the past 3 yrs; who's to say what will be shown in another 3 yrs? ;-) One of my Dr's is very excited to have me start "Active Folate", aka L-methylfolate or 5-MTHF, which means I have to stop folic acid supplements. Another Dr thinks it's all bologna. I did some research and decided to give it a try. My choice was based on studies and articles that compound heterozygous A1298C and C677T (my situation) or homozygous C677T are often associated with... Recurrent Pregnancy Loss, even when fasting homocysteine levels are normal (which mine are). Her (2006) http://www.reproduction-online.org/c.../131/2/395.pdf Him (2006) http://humrep.oxfordjournals.org/cgi...ull/21/12/3162 The baby (2002) http://www.nature.com/ejhg/journal/v.../5200767a.html Cardiovascular disease (over half my family), even when when fasting homocysteine levels are normal. (2009) http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/cont...rt/119/18/2507 Depression (the other half of my family), often responds better to methylfolate than folic acid. There are indications that an excess of folic acid in folks who cannot metabolize it well (i.e. MTHFR) negatively impacts what little folate is metabolized. (2007) http://www.cnsspectrums.com/aspx/art...articleid=1267 Some of the medical community is starting to suggest that excess folic acid, especially in those with MTHFR, likely increases the risk of Alzheimers (my grandmother), etc. Here's an article that's mild... (2008) http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/87/3/517 I had one RE put me on 4mg(!) folic acid and another RE immediately take me off. Then my other Dr suggested the folate. We'll see... Rolling the dice ... again... and again, ~S

Hi. I actually went ahead and bought them a while ago, was on them for a long time until I was given a prescription for metanx once pregnancy was confirmed. I had also been place on Neevo prenatals just prior to conception (both Neevo and Metanx contain the same type of folate, L-methylfolate). Lucky to report that they did work for me as I am now 18 weeks pregnant. I am also taking Fish Oil and BA. I had one IVF cycle with just regilar folic acid in high doses and that was a bust. All of my miscarriages were early losses, but with my new protocol I've been able to carry this far along. Thanks for your post and the info. You can see my history under my profile, I think we have a lot in common.

That's good news and more good news!!! (Congratulations!)
Thank you for the update. I'll keep on with my L-methylfolate; I've only been taking a cycle or so... hardly any time at all. ;-) Hugs! ~S |
