Lovenox and Delivery (MTHFR)
I'm on lovenox for compound hetero MTHFR. My RE, hematologist (who I started seeing b/c of this) and OB all didn't think I need lovenox for this but I kind of insisted b/c I had some early losses and they agreed that it couldn't really hurt. My OB and hematologist want me off lovenox as I get closer to my due date b/c of the bleeding issues. Also I guess you can't get an epidural if you're on lovenox (I'm not sure if I'll get one or not but I want the option!). Both think taking me off all blood thinners at 36 weeks would be fine but I'm kind of paranoid about it (I'm 33 weeks now). They suggested putting me on low dose heparin (heparin has a shorter half life so it's easier to stop) till about 38 weeks which I thought was ok, but now I've read a few articles about deaths related to contaminated heparin from China. I have to ask them about this b/c I literally just saw the articles, but now I'm paranoid. Maybe I am better off go off all blood thinners at 36 weeks. I just don't know what to do!
Thanks!

Hey Lora-
It's been a couple years, so I may be foggy on the fine details, but I switched from Lovenox to Heparin about 3 weeks before my due date. You're right that Lovenox stays in your system longer than Heparin and there is another drug that will counteract heparin and stop the thinner from being active in case you go into labor unexpectedly. Maybe that's an option for you? I've never been told that I couldn't have an epidural b/c of the lovenox/heparin stuff. ~mrs_trup |
