MTHFR, Folic acid, with or without food? pg mentioned

I'm experiencing nausea and not sure if its from the folic acid or not. I take it in the morning on an empty stomach along with my thyroid medicine. and i take it throughout the day. I have MTHFR C HOMOZYGOUS, so take 3mg besides for the prenatal.

Is it giving anyone nausea or is it early signs of morning sickness (i am 5w6d pg)

Thanks.

re: folic acid

I never take my prenatal/vitamins on an empty stomach. I would be incredibly nauseaus. Also, are you supposed to be taking your thyroid meds with your prenatal? I believe that thyroid meds are supposed to be taken on an empty stomach, but also four hours before you take anything with iron, calcium, or zinc? Just checking.

I take the tyroid medicine in the morning along with a plain folic acid. not a prenatal, just a folic acid.

in a prenatal its the iron and stuff causing issues, not the folic acid. that causes the nausea.

i'm goign to start taking it with food and see if it maeks a difference.

May I ask how much folate you take ? My Dr. suggested 3mg on top of my PNV - doesn't that seem high?

I take a total of 4mg. 3mg (3 of the 1mg pills) and a prenatal which has 1 in it.

Its 1 per mutation i think, so if you're homozygous u take 4.. or something like that. so i take as much as you. Thanks.

Hello I'm new to the board I also have MTHFR 1 copy, my RE has also put me on a total of 4 mg folic acid, 100 mg of B6 and 350 mcg of B12. From what I understand with this type of MTHFR you are at higher risk for neural tube defects. Hope this helps.

Thanks susan - Folic acid helps prevent Neural Tube Defects, and people with MTHFR don't absorb folic acid they way they should, thats why we have to take SO MUCH of it!!
