New here, confused and responses so appreciated
Anyone else feel lost in all of this? I have different opinions from
far too many doctors. I'll give you my background in brief and appreciate any responses so much. I had two late first trimester losses and was diagnosed with MTHFR homozygous. My homocysteine levels were 14.7. I did NOT fast for this test. My first question, should I have fasted? Second question, I've read up to 14 is normal in some places and up to 10 in others? Which is it? This pg (now 28 weeks along) was a surprise. At the time we conceived I was taking a prenatal vitamin with extra folic acid AND I was taking 850 mcg of OTC folic acid for my own health, not expecting to get pg. Once I found out I was pg I began taking Folgard 2.2 in addition to the pnv, only once a day though. I also started to take a baby aspirin at that time. At 10 weeks I began taking 4 mg of folic acid because one of my Drs finally got it right! As for prenatal testing, I had the AFP triple screen which came back normal and I've had two ultrasounds, both showing a healthy baby. I do realize the AFP only catches about 70% of Downs Syndrome cases and that the absence of soft markers on the US also does not mean we are in the clear. My concern is whether or not I was on enough folic acid or not? I realize they recommend higher BUT if my homocysteine levels were not high could I still be ok in terms of my risk for downs syndrome? With the AFP being normal and the US being good, it's hopeful right? Also, when should I stop the baby aspirin? I have 3 doctors in my practice telling me different things. I'm at a loss here. The perinatologist I saw was worse, he told me not to take the aspirin until 10 week! Would have been WAY too late. Please offer any advice or reassurance that you can? I'm so confused and feel like no one cares bc my doctors seem lost too. Women with this condition often have healthy babies and don't even know it right? So, the folic acid in my pnv (850 mcg) plus my OTC folic acid (850 mcg) might be enough right? Thanks in advance and I'm sorry for all you've been through as well. Renee

Renee,
It's been three months so I don't know if you are still reading your thread responses or not, but I wanted to reply just in case. I was dx hetero A and C MTHFR. I don't know what a healthy range for homocysteine levels is, because I was just told mine is fine, without any further info. I was told originally that if I take a pnv + mentanx (1.8 mg additional folic acid) that it would suffice. I later consulted with a renowned specialist who advised me to take an additional mg of folic acid to = about 4 mg daily. The quantity you are taking sounds about right. I don't know how this relates to statistics with Down's as I thought the folic acid was to treat other disorders such as CF, spina bifida, etc. I'm sorry I don't have more info for you and that you had to wait so long for a response. I hope your pregnancy is progressing well and you'll have a healthy baby to bring home. Good Luck. Shef |
