I know this threat started a while back. However, i am interested to know how do you find out that any of u ladies have MTHFR?
I have 2 older kids from my 1st marriage 20 yrs ago. wiht my current marriage, we have been trying to conceive. we got pregnant 2 times naturally and 1 time through an IUI
all 3 were miscarried. first was around 11 wks, second was very early 5 wks beta did not rise well. However, the last one was very traumatic, i was taking progesteron and baby aspirin so we can be on the safe side. at 11.3 wks i developed a hemothoma that caused me bleeding, cervix was shut and baby was still active. Dr made me stop the baby aspirin which i wish i never did.. anyhow, bleeding stopped for 3 wks and had another bleeding and started to have contraction for a whole week.. U/S showed baby still fine and moving.. anyway, 3 days after i had a placenta abroption where i delivered my baby boy angel. it was very hard and i hope that i wont experience this trama anymore..
my RE did thrombophilia test in addtion to many regular blood work including all came normal.. and now we are waiting for the Karyotype test for both me and my husband.
can women have a normal result on the pt,ptt and lupus and then develop clots during pregnancy which cause miscarriage..
Would Karyotype shows if i have MTHFR? if not what blood test i should ask my RE for?
i honestly do not want them to say oh it is just luck that you had 3 misscarriages, i want to find out what hwas the problem, and try to find a slolution...
what other tests i should ask for? and Why is B6 and B12 are good to take?
thank you in advance and hope someone can reply to all my questions and concernsFSH: 11.2009(38) highest & lowest 02.2010 ( 3.8)

Hi all, I guess since this thread is still stickied I'll reply in it.
My wife was just diagnosed with an MTHFR mutation/deficiency after 4-5 years of treaments (including 3 IVF cycles). She is on a vitamin/folic acid/asprin regiment now starting this week.
We have never experienced a miscarriage in our treatment history, which also means we've never experienced a pregnancy. Is it still a possibility that the MTHFR mutation is a root cause to our problem? or does it seem unlikely? It seems like a lot of women who have been diagnosed with this problem also have had a history of miscarriages. While it is possible that we have been pregnant and miscarried without knowing it, we've had 3 negative IVFs and 3 negative IUIs. We've never looked upon a positive pregnancy test.
Just curious if anyone has any input on this.
Thanks

Yeah it is really hard to say. My wife is on follic acid, low does asprin and prenatals now. She has the homozygous c677t mutation as well as a slight protein deficiency (I wish I could remember what). Our RE mentioned that these problems could contribute to an attached embryo actually being 'choked' more or less due to blood clotting.
Our RE has recommended 1 more IVF cycle this year. Gonal-F with a Lupron trigger. She wants to supplement the Lupron trigger with a small dose of HCG as a kind of kick-start. I think we're going to hold off a little while though.

asindy There is absolutely no good evidence to prove that any form of MTHFR contributes to lack of pregnancy. It's not even 100% certain that it contributes to pregnancy loss -- even that is still up for debate.
Your wife does have the most severe form, and if she has a protein deficiency then she assuredly is already suffering a clotting disorder. This is not just a reproductive issue, it's a medical issue about which her primary care physician should be informed.
She should ask for a prescription for methylfolate, not folic acid, if you want to be absolutely safe. And next time she does IVF or even IUI -- insist on Lovenox inejctions. It can't hurt the fetus, only potentially the mother (women taking Lovenox risk bleeding to death in the case of car accident or other trauma) and it seems to work for many women, even when they don't have a diagnosable MTHFR clotting disorder. (That's not to say they don't have some other disorder that the drug is working on without us understanding.) That's my advice.
I wish you both good luck in 2012!

Hi everyone. I am new to this site and this is my first post.
I was married for 12 years. We have an 11 year old daughter together who was concieved without trying. After that, we went through 9 years of trying/fertility treatments. The diagnosis was unexplained secondary infertility. We had 2 IUIs and a round of IVF with no luck. I had great embryos and almost all of my eggs fertilized, so there didn't seem to be a problem with the 'sperm meets egg' part of the equation.
After getting divorced and being with my current partner for 3 years, we decided to try. I am 36 and he is 33. We stopped birth control a year ago, and of course, nothing happened. He had his sperm tested and his results were perfect. I am seeing a new RE who had some new ideas. The genetic testing showed that I had a hetero MTHFR mutation, great AmH, and some sort of vaginal bacteria (not an STD). He said about half of the general population has some sort of bacteria and it will prevent you from getting pregnant. We took Zithromax to take care of it. From what I have read, taking Folic acid, B6, and B12 suppliments will help with the MTHFR issue.
Has anyone had any success with *just* having this treatment without having IVF? In 9 years of treatment, this is the first time anyone has even brought up MTHFR or the bacteria issue.
Is there anyone out there with any other ideas of what we could be missing?
Thank you for your help!
Amy

Your bacterial infection, if it was mycoplasma or ureaplasma, then yes, there are women I know personally who did get pregnant once they got that treated.
If it was BV, bacterial vaginosis, then my understanding is that that bacteria does not prevent pregnancy but instead causes preterm labor.

I just completed my first cycle of IVF and had my transfer yesterday. Having been diagnosed with homozygous C MTHFR mutation, I have been on Folbee and low dose aspirin for a year now. My RE said it was up to me if I'd like to stay on current treatment or add Lovenox. Since we have moved onto IVF, I figured I didn't want to potentially risk another loss... so, I opted for Lovenox.
My question is are there any tips/ things to expect with regards to this shot?Me: 38 (homozygous MTHFR, DOR)
DH: 33 (perfect)
TTC since 2011
Feb 2011: natural= BFP... M/C @ 12 wks

Hi bsualum!
I'm currently on Lovenox for the second time. The first was with my successful pg, but I didn't get to the Dr in time for my last pg, and lost the baby aprox 1 day before the US appointment. I'm taking it for APA and compound hetero MTHFR. The injections are done once a day (at the same time each day) in the stomach area. It burns a little, but is not too bad, and in my experience was more comfortable than heparin. At 36 weeks, you would switch to heparin 2x a day, as you prepare for labor and delivery. The heparin only lasts 12 hours, hence having to inject it twice daily. With IVF you're already a pro with injections, so I'm sure you'll be fine! Baby dust to you!
