15 weeks, woke up to a soaked bed...

I woke up at 1am to a soaked bed and underwear. My water seemed to have broke. I went to the ER where an obgyn resident did a ph test and informed me that it tested positive for amniotic fluid. She told me that I had "completely ruptured." She told me that my options were to go home and wait for labor or have a d&e, pending my OB's review. My OB was coming on shift at 7am so we stayed there all night, crying our eyes out.

My OB ordered maternal fetal medicine to do a bedside ultrasound to measure fluid. We didn't look at the ultrasound, and I was hysterical the entire time. I could feel the baby move so, I knew s/he was still with us. Both the head of MFM and my OB were in the room. They said fluid was totally normal and that the baby was moving freely about.

They said my bladder was very full and suspected that I leaked alot of urine. They said that there was no way I could leak so much fluid that I would soak the bed and for fluid to be normal 10 hours later. My OB had me cough and checked for leakage. Nada.

Any experiences with this? We still have not recovered emotionally and are still on edge. I am supposed to monitor wetness and take my temp just in case.

I am going to my MFM doc on Tuesday for my first cervix measurement so they will look at the baby and fluid.

    Hi midnight,

I don't have exact experience with that, but I did have some scary times with incompetent cervix and lots of hospital time. I just wanted to wish you the best of luck. I know how sad and afraid you must feel to think of the what ifs, but the important thing is that baby is with you NOW and fluid looks GREAT! My fingers are crossed for a long and healthy pregnancy!

Oh Midnight, big hugs hun. I can't even imagine how scared you must have been and still are. Can you get in to see your MFM Dr. sooner? I have no experience but did have an episode with DS#2 where I felt for sure that I was leaking amniotic fluid at around 22 wks, went to ER and test was negative.

Rest as much as possible and please keep us updated. You and your little one are in my thoughts and prayers.

Midnight: Holy Scary Night!!! please just try to find some peace in that last sono.....fully in tact fetus and amnio sac. It's natural that you would be totally PTSD over the whole thing, but remember that cortisol, that stress hormone is no good for anything right now!!!! I have a good feeling for you!!! Please keep us up to speed.

This hasn't happened to me but I do know several women that this happened to -- where they so completely wet their pants in their sleep that they were sure they had ruptured. Their ERs were able to identify it as urine though so they did not suffer the way you are.

One of them it only ever happened to once but the other 2 just kept night-wetting themselves, they eventually stopped panicking when it happened. I can understand why you're panicked as this is the first time it's happened to you and the ER lady gave you such stark, bleak options.

    Keep us updated!

Thank you so much for all your replies and kind words. We've been doing ok. I have resolved not to put my mind and body through that much stress. I know it isn't good for the baby. If we have another emergency, I think I will avoid the ER. They don't know how to handle pregnant women, and I feel lucky that they didn't do an intervention that could have harmed the baby. I had to beg for an IV because they wouldn't let me drink. I was like, I'm pregnant and dehydrated! Not a good combination... After 20 weeks (knock on wood), you go right to maternity.

I hope for a calm time ahead and a healthy baby.
