29 Weeks And Battling A Cold

    Hi Ladies,

I'm 29 weeks and have been battling a cold for a little over a week. It started off with a dreadful sore throat which lasted for 4 days. I started to get the nasty greenish snot 2nd day into my sore throat. The sore throat subsided, then the stuffy nose, phlegmy coughs came. I was in my OB last week and bought it up to her, but by that time it felt like my cold was starting to blow over so I didn't think I needed to take anything for it. I still feel sickly this week and still have the stuffy nose and phlegm, but not as bad as last week. My eyes still feel like they want to pop out of my eye sockets. I've been having these headaches as well but I think the sinus and stuffy nose is causing them.

I feel like I'm taking longer to get over this cold than I normally do. Does this have anything to do with me being pregnant? How long do colds usually last when you're pregnant?

Is there anything I could do for myself to help ease this or move it along? I'm drinking loads of water already.

You should get it checked out. You could have a sinus infection and need antibiotics. Otherwise, lots of fluids and take some Tylenol for the headache if you need to.

Hi. So sorry you are sick! Both my DH and I got sick somewhere in the second trimester. It was a miserable 3 days but it cleared up without any meds.

It sounds like a sinus infection for sure. You may need antibiotics. I know it isn't ideal when you are pregnant but you do need to get better. I would go back to your OB before the weekend. If you are really nervous about taking antibiotics, you can double check with your PCP about safety and the pharmacist. Every medication will say to consult with a doctor if you are pregnant before taking. Tyelnol is definitely the pain reliver of choice for preg moms.

Colds can defiantely last longer when you are pregnant. You should go get it checked out though, because it sounds like it may be a sinus infection, and you definitely need to take care of that. There are several antibiotics that are safe or pregnancy. I was on antibiotics a few times during each of my pregnancies for various infections. It is safer to get it taken care of vs letting it spread of make you sicker.

I called the dr on-call just right now about it. I wasn't sure if I should go see my internist or my OB. I'm going to get it checked out at my internist tomorrow....looking like I'm going to get some antibiotics. The OB on-call says the antibiotics are 95% safe, and the antibiotics used to treat sinus infections are 100% safe.

    Thanks ladies!

It turns out that I do have an infection! Oh my gosh, I'm so glad I posted and lucky you guys all point me in the right direction. If I didn't know any better, I'd probably try to wait it out and have my body try to clear on its own. My internist put me on antibiotics. Hopefully, it will clear up asap!

    Thanks everyone!

Glad you got it checked out. I'm sure you will feel better once the antibiotic kicks in.

I have had my cold since the beginning of December! NO JOKE!! lol I had a cough that got so bad I could not catch my breath and had to see my primary, where he was worried and gave me a zpak and inhaler, as well as some nose spray. I also was taking mucinex and claritin! I had a small rattle and wheeze to my coughs by the time I went in. My cough is still around, just not as bad, but there were many days that it felt like I broke a rib! I still have congestion issues and am still running our vaporizers. I will be happy when I no longer have to cough or blow my nose a million times a day!

I hope you get to feeling better. I really think that we just get hit harder cause we are pregnant!

That's great Lilacs. Glad you got it looked at.

Ferret Mommy, ouch that all sounds painful. I agree, I think when you're pregnant, a common cold is twofold. Hope you get rid of that cough once and for all soon.
