    Craving Tomatoes And Anemia

    Hi Ladies,

I've been getting these massive cravings for tomatoes since last week. It didn't occur to me that my recent fondness of tomatoes might be a craving because it's still very early on in my pregnancy to get be getting cravings. So, I've been fighting the craving and feeling miserable, antsy, and tired. Until today, I finally gave into my tomato craving, I ate an entire tomato. And almost instantly, I felt better. I did quick search on the internet and it appears that it might be linked to iron deficiency or anemia. Then, it clicked! I have a history of being low on iron and a few occasions where I was anemic. Any one else gone through this tomato craving and found it linked to iron deficiency or anemia?

    Thanks.

Hi Lilacs. Congrats on your pregnancy. I have no advice on the tomatoes and low iron/anemic. Have you mentioned it to your Dr so they can do a blood test and check for you? Keep us updated hun.

I haven't heard that about tomatoes, but I was going to say the same thing Sherb did. I know chomping on ice and craving ice is a sign of anemia. My ob did a ton of blood work at my first ob appointment (at 6 weeks), one of which was an iron/anemia test. He reran it again later on at 25 weeks. If you have a history of anemia, I would make sure to get the test run periodically throughout your pregnancy.

I will say I felt drop dead tired throughout my entire first trimester (and it has hit again now in the 3rd trimester), so that can be completely normal.

    Good luck!

I never knew that about the ice. And when I was pregnant with DS#1 I craved ice like crazy. Crushed it up and had it every evening.

The ice thing applies when not pregnant as well. I had a co-worker who was constantly craving and chomping on ice. I mentioned it to her, and at her next dr appointment she brought it up and sure enough she was low on iron and had to go on suppliments. Since then her ice cravings have diminished.

I've been craving ice a lot, but I think part of it is due to the 95-100 degree weather. lol I love a cold glass of ice water and always chomp on the ice when I'm done with the water. My iron levels were checked a few weeks ago and were fine, so I'm not overly worried about it.

My RE checked and my levels were a little low, but she told me it's nothing to be worry about. Other than that, she told me everything else is looking good! I think she is more concerned about any discomfort or pain that may arise because everyone's worried about the possible ectopic!
