I apologize in advance for the long post but could really use all your wise advice. Reading all your posts in the past has always helped me so much so here goes.....
I've been having tooth pain (not horrible, only just when I try to chew on my left side) for a while and after 4 dentist appointments and going to see a specialist/ endodontist, found out that they recommend a root canal. I've already had a root canal on this tooth and the xrays shows no infection but the dr said it could have gotten reinfected which won't show up in xrays. She said it isn't an emergency sitution at the moment but she would hate for it to get really bad and it is always better to treat a tooth when caught early. They said they would use a local anesthesia (lidocane mixed with epinephrine). The dr said the best time to have a root canal is in the second trimester which I am so I didn't think anything of it. I just happened to go to my OB that same day and I mentioned it to her and she said lidocane is safe but no epinephrine. So I call my endodontist back up and she said that the epinephrine allows for the numbness to stay in your system longer and that if she just used lidocane, I'll most likely will be in the middle of my root canal and will no longer be numb which terrifies me. She also mentioned that your own body will make epinephrine on its own if under stressful conditions and this is worse for the baby than the small amount of epinphrine she would use. I know pregnant woman have dental work/ root canals all the time while pregnant... what did you do. Did your OB and endodontist have such conflicting views? I usually always go with my OB's recommendation but the thought of having a root canal and in the middle of procedure no longer be numb completely freaks me out. The other option is wait until I give birth but I am also scared that it would get infected and I will go into pre-term labor or something horrible like that. I am almost 23 weeks along.
Any insights will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had a root canal at 14weeks pregnant. I had no problems...pregnant women should NOT have the numbing with Epinephrine in it. The root canal doesn't take a long time. I would get a note from your OB...a lot of dentists have no idea what is really pregnancy safe. I would take care of it now...u don't want infection in your body and once your baby is here...you may put it off longer.

It's a class C drug. Epinephrine Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding | Drugs.com. I think class C is one of those benefits should outweigh the risks type of drugs.
I would find out how much they are planning on giving you. I'm wondering if it's just local the amount might be ok. Can you call another OB in your practice? Also find out the exact dosage? These studies shoe effects at 25X the normal dosage.
I personally would probably just have it done. An infection would be way worse.Wendy

I had a root canal done with my last pregnancy and was also told absolutely no epinephrine either. My dentist already knew that when I told him and wasn't going to give it to me anyway. I did not have any issues with the numbness wearing off. I would totally follow the advice of your OB and possibly find a new dentist. You don't want to wait to deal with this because an infection can literally eat a hole in your jawbone. I had this happen and had to get an implant which cost me thousands, even with insurance. Good luck - I know dental issues stink - I have had my share of them!Gem 75

I agree with the other ladies, the OB is right on this one. I had a back tooth crack off while early in my first pg and the dentist made sure I knew up front that the numbing medication they would use would not have epinephrine in it, it would take a little longer to make me numb and it would wear off faster, so they might have to renumb me if it took too long. They did have to renumb me, but it doesn't wear off so fast that I went from totally numb to not numb at all, you know? They had told me as soon as I started feeling that tingly waking up feeling to let them know, I did, they gave me another shot and finished up. Easy as pie.Raising children is like being pecked to death by chickens.

I had a root canal at 11 weeks pregnant for similar reasons. My pregnancy is high risk and I consulted with both my OBs (delivery and perinatologist) who gave their blessing. Neither mentioned an epinephrine restriction, but my dentist was aware that I am pregnant. I got several rounds of injections before he began the work, and I stayed numb during the whole procedure. I also got a 7 day prescription for amoxicillin, which neither OB was concerned about, either.me (33) dh (48) stepmom to dd (14), dd(18), ds(20) :smileyh:

After reading all your great feedback, I got my root canal yesterday. The dentist didn't use the epi and I did have to get a booster in the middle but otherwise it went well. It was a good thing I didn't wait because the tooth was pretty infected.
Thanks again! Glad that is over!
