Finally got some answers from RE.

I called my OB to inquire about E2 levels and nobody had any answers, but they were not happy that the clinic wasn't taking our question seriously. The OB decided to call my RE directly to complain that such a question should not be ignored.

My RE finally called me directly and he was extremely considerate in addressing my concern. He indicated that a single pg should have an E2 level of about 2000. So having almost 4000 with twins is okay and it also reveals that my body is already making enough estrogen. A 1mg patch every three days would only account for a small percentage of this E2 hormonal level.

It would have helped if the nurse could have followed up with instead of playing games. I probably wouldn't have questioned my E2 level if she didn't make the comment that my number was so excessively high. We also learned that the nurse provided the wrong dose of E2 patches since my RE reccommended two patches every three days (not just one) from the begining. This caused a lot of confusion when other people were trying to help give directions to wean me off patches.

Thanks so much for you feedback and support.

I don't know what the confirmed risks are with high E2 levels duing pregnancy, but I recently gave birth to my ds (3 weeks early - I will post with details) and he has an undescended testicle (i.e., his left testicle has not dropped into his scrotum yet). I have been reading a lot on the topic lately (it may have to be surgically corrected), and many sources note that hormone therapy during pregnancy (e.g., estrogen supplementation) may be a contributing factor if a male fetus is involved. I was not on estrogen during my pregnancy -- just prometrium -- but I thought I would toss that "finding" in for all it is worth. In short, my view is, if you don't need it, come off of it during pregnancy!

glad you finally got some answers. i was hoping that your high numbers would have something to do with your multiples.

that nurse sounds like an idiot!

thx

Brownbear, I also heard about the possibility of genital issues arising from hormonal therapy which was part of my concern. I heard that progesterone could be a contributing factor. How long were you on progesterone and what was your dosage? Just surious. My RE should take me off the 1cc pf PIO at 7.5 wks this coming Monday (I'm currently doing these shots every other day) and he advised me to continue 100mg suppositories twice a day through 12 wks.

Again, thx.

The above mentioned estrogen/genital issues link is exactly why I posted to you initially, commending you for taking this seriously. My first ds was born with a condition called hypospadias. His penis has required 3 surgeries to correct this problem. In his case it was relatively minor and everything works well...but had we not corrected the chordee (a bend in the penis), an erection would have been probably very painful for him, and intercourse likely impossible. There are some indications that excess estrogen in the mother causes this condition...although there are other theories, too. My 2nd ds does not have this condition. I did IVF with both pgs, and while I did not take extra estrogen, I did take PIO 1cc/day for 12 weeks. I have endometriosis as a dx--one theory behind THAT disease is too much estrogen....so, we'll never really know what happened...but any type of hormone therapy comes with it's own risks.

Kudos to you for following this up!!

Estremely High Estrogen Level

I was curious to see how this prenancy went, and if the high estrogen had any negative effects on your twins.

We are dealing with two kinds of hormone imbalances with my daughter in laws, and are looking for any information we can get regarding your situation.

Thanks,

I wasn't even given estrogen after my ivf, nor did they ever test it? They only tested it prior to trigger when i was developing folicles.

Should I be concerned that I'm 9 weeks now and they haven't checked it recently, nor do they plan on checking it?

In my observation, only about 1/2 of ivf doctors use or test estrogen post retrieval and the other half don't think it needs to be worried about. I wouldn't be concerned at this point if I were you.
