Question about beta numbers after loss of twin?
I've been reading these boards for years and just joined today. I Was at 5 weeks and just knew I had a m/c last night. I had a lot of blood and some clots.
I had a beta that as 2000 last week and today after the m/c its 2400. My doctory said that my u/s showed one sac she then proceeded to say that I may have lost a twin. She wants me to continue to do my shots and do another beta on Saturday. Is there any hope for me? Does losing a twin cause the numbers to go down then back up? I feel my doctor (while she is a great doctor god bless her) is giving me false hope.

I don't think she is necessarily giving you false hope. Some women do have bleeding and pass clots without it actually being a m/c. I've seen plenty of stories of women who have an u/s showing one or two heartbeats that have some heavy bleeding and clots, then still see the one or two heartbeats. Sometimes a twin has been m/c and sometimes the bleeding is just plain unexplained.
If your ob still sees a sac, there is hope. I think when a twin loss is suspected, betas quit doubling for some days, but they continue to rise. I know this is very scary for you, but hang in there. It's not over yet. BTW, you probably know that 5 weeks is often too early for a h/b too, so the lack of one doesn't really indicate anything either. Diana PS, Glad you decided to de-lurk! |

Try not to worry. I have had blood and I am still carrying twins at 13.5 weeks. You can lose a twin early and go on to have healthy singleton. (vanishing twin syndrome) My girlfriend did IVF, had twins, but had a terrible blood clot in her uterus the entire 1st trimester. She said it was hell, but it went away. She thinks it was a third embryo.
You never know about these things. I have had to accept that not all pregnancys are the same. Blood can definetley freak you out. Good Luck! |
