Exclamation 33wks pregnant and blood in urine...concerned about what doctor is telling me!

Ok, I am 33wks today and tonight I had blood in my urine twice when going to the bathroom. I call the on call doctor and she asks me if I have any pain or discomfort when I go. I tell her no and she says well if you are having blood in your urine than that would normally be pretty uncomfortable when you go to the bathroom. So I ask her if it could be coming from the other area and she said yes it is possible. So she tells me not to worry and to drink lots of fluids and call back if I start having pain or discomfort when I go to the bathroom?!?!

Call me crazy, but if I have blood coming from either hole shouldn't I be evaluated?!?!?!?

Cindy

Do you by any chance have hemmorhoids? That can cause bleeding.

Yes, I have had problems with some internal ones, but I only notice blood (if and when they are flaring up) when I have a bowel movement. After that I will notice small amounts of bright red blood on the toilet paper when I wipe (TMI - sorry). I've never seen blood in the toilet from my hemorroids when I am simply uriniating.

Tonight my urine was tinted pink when I looked in the toilet.

I called and talked to a nurse in labor and delivery and she made me feel better. She said to push the fluids and rest. Watch the urine and come in immediately if I start having any pain or the blood turns bright red. She agreed that if it is blood in the urine I should be having some discomfort when I go so it could be coming from my vagina. She did say if it continues regardless I will need to be seen so if there is an infection it can be treated.

Anyway, I am going to continue to fill up on water like I do all day anyway and try and rest but my mind is going crazy. I admit I am nervous - maybe for no good reason, but I am.

Thanks for responding,
Cindy

Well, I guess if it were me I'd insist that somebody do a culture on the urine to see if it was a UTI. That itself can cause early labour--I know you are 33 weeks, but I'm sure you'd rather not have your baby now.

I think you have to follow your instinct here. If you're nervous have somebody (go to a walk in clinic if necessary) follow up with this to, at the very least, ease your mind.

Well the blood is getting darker now. Doubt it will start getting lighter before it gets darker so I imagine before the night is through DH and I will be heading to the hospital to get it checked out.

Will keep you posted and thanks for the advice. I can tell you even if it was still light pink tomorrow morning I would be going at least to my primary care physican to have culture done!

Oh Cindy how terribly scary! I hope you are having some good doctors taking good care of you as we speak! I am glad you decided to go get medical attention!

Let us know how you are when you can.

Well....after the last episode of darker tinted urine (and yes, it is definitely blood in my urine and not coming from the other area) it started to get lighter?!?! It is now morning and I have not had any more blood. The only thing I can think of is that I was having some lower back pain on my right side the last two days that was off and on and I attributed it to pregnancy or pulled muscle or something, but now I am beginning to think I may have passed a kidney stone that was small enough not to cause any discomfort when I urinated, but big enough to irritate something along the way out.

What do you kidney stone experts think?

Cindy

Nothing from personal experience, just that they made two of my friends weep with pain

I am glad the bleeding stopped. Keep an eye on things though and go see the dr. when/if it returns?

I would still go see a doctor. I had the same thing happen to me several years ago. Mine started with just the little pain in my lower back. Also the blood. It turned out that i did have a UTI. My friend also has one when she was pg and didnt even know it until she went in for a regular scheduled appt and they checked her urine as they normally did. It is not true that you will always feel discomfort or pain down there. Mine was only in my back and my freind had NONE at all. I was also told by my doctor that you can have a UTI without having any symptoms. Not good to have an untreated infection while pg. I would get it checked out.
GOOD luck and let us know!
