    Diarrhea - 3 Month Old

    Hi Ladies,

LO just turned 3 months this passed weekend. She's being breastfed exclusively and nursing is going super well. This morning, LO got her first runny watery diaper. So wet and runny that it ran up her back and I ended up drawing her a bath to clean her up. It's literally like diarrhea runny so I am a little worried. I took her temperature and she does not have a fever. I don't know if she's caught a cold or if it's what I ate for dinner last night that's affecting her since she is being breastfed. The last couple of days have been cool in the mornings and evenings, but warm up quite a bit during the days. I'm careful not to bundle her too much in clothing. So I'm wondering if it has anything to do with what I ate for dinner last night - halibut and salad. Would that have given her diarrhea?

I am a first time mom as well so all this is very new to me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I think it's pretty normal for them to have runny poops until they start solids. My two month old has poop up her back every time due to it being runny. I wouldn't worry!!

I don't think my son had a solid poop the whole time he was breast fed. I think they all have one of those explosions at some point, be thankful you were at home when it happened.

If her behaviour, apetite etc seem normal I wouldn't worry.

As long as she is taking fluids down she should be fine. If she won't eat ormthrowsmup right after eating, you may want to call her pedi.

I would bring her to the pediatrician if it doesn't clear up. Younger DS had very loose diapers at this age that didn't go away (he was forumula fed) and I took him to the Dr. The pediatrician tested him for a couple of things and turned out he had salmonella!!! The Dr.had to test his blood as well because if it was in hi GI tract AND his blood he would have to be in the hospital for 2 weeks with IVF antibiotics. Fortunatly the salmonella was just in the GI tract and he just had the antibiotics for 2 days.

I agree that it's the norm for b/f infants to have very runny diapers. All three of my girls had blow-outs that required tub time. Until they're eating solids, runny is normal.

I think I just freaked out when I saw her super watery diaper because it was my first encounter, and it was all over her back. She didn't have any more of those runny watery ones after that initial one. She's eating normal. She hasn't refused nursing. I am relieved! Thanks ladies!

Super, super watery could be a fore milk imbalance. Fore milk is thinner, sweeter and higher in carbs some babies like ti better so will pull off when the hind milk comes in. Try nursing on the same breast longer to get more hind milk in her. That is what give the poop that seedy texture and gets more brain building fats into her little body. The other thing you can try is breast compression Breastfeeding Breast Compression with Dr. Jack Newman - YouTube The other thought I had was that sensitivity to something in your diet might cause that. The most common culprits are dairy, wheat and soy.

Thanks! Now that you mention it, she use to have seedy diapers pretty regularly. Recently, the last couple of days, I don't think I've seen a seedy one. Actually, the last couple of days, it's mostly wet diapers around the clock - urine. She had like a couple of super wet poopy ones and that's about it.

PS Thanks for the link! I really appreciate it! My little one sometimes fall asleep on the breast!
