How do you make a 3 year old smile for photos?

DS#1 has the greatest smile - his baby and toddler pictures are absolutely adorable. But somewhere along the way, he stopped smiling for the camera. His smile became a flash, and we struggle to get it on film now. If we ask him to smile, he'll grimace. If we ask him to say cheese, he'll say cheese but not actually look up. So frustrating. How the heck do you teach your child to smile for the camera again? He's just so serious and focused on his toys now...I miss that great big grin.

You will not get a true smile if you ask kids to say cheese or even to smile. I do photography PT and I talk to them and get at their level. Talk about his favorite toy, TV show, sports, animal anything likes and be ready to snap the picture as you are talking. Kids really don't even realize I'm taking their picture as we are talking and I get some great smiles and some great candids. I prefer candids over posed pictures.

I was also going to suggest talking with him at his level, about things that he finds funny or that makes him happy--I have a 6-year old ds who would crack-up if I mentioned farts and/or any other gross bodily function. Some boys are into that

We play the sneeze game. For some reason ever since my twins heard/saw me sneeze when they were about 8mon old they go nuts. Now at 2.5yrs old they will laugh hysterically if i sneeze, especially if i hold something in my hand and act like i am throwing it at them when i sneeze. Silly, I know, but it works charms! Sometimes i will even put a toy on my head and sneeze throwing the toy as i sneeze, oh the joys of twin giggles!

Our photographer used this trick: she would say, "whatever you do, do NOT look in this camera. And whatever you do, do NOT smile." This would result is big smiles for the pics - good luck!

Take A LOT of pics and be ready! Ian is bad at fake smiles, but when you can catch them laughing and being themselves is the best for sure! If I didnt have a digital camera, I would be screwed, for sure!!! Sometimes I ask, can I take your pic and he will say no, so I will get out the camera and take it of anything, the couch, tv, toys, and all of a sudden he wants HIS pic to be taken and as a reward, he gets to see himself on the camera.... but there are many pics taken that are bad before I get a good one!

dd#1 will be 4 this month. not only will she not smile, she won't sit still and/or will turn her head away. sigh.

i like the suggestions so far. others that help a bit... don't use 'cheese' or 'smile' -- use 'm' words to get a better look (forget where i read it)... so we try to go for 'monkey' or 'milkshake'

in the meantime our 20 month old has taken a huge shine to 'cheese' (must be from school?) -- and will spontaneously strike a pose and give a big cheesey smile if she thinks someone has a camera. too funny.

My foolproof method for getting both boys to laugh was to say in a very sober, solemn voice with a straight face "There's nothing funny in the world." They would absolutely crack up. Every time.

I should try it again to see if it still works!
