Younger DS, who is 5, had this Halloween week. They didn't say to come dressed as your Halloween costume but instead told the kids to dress as their favorite book character. I don't think many really took that advice. Nonetheless there was a parade and all the kids were dressed up. Let me think what I saw...

Star Wars characters (yes there are books on them)
Max (from the Where the Wild Things Are ~ basically grey sweats, a yellow felt crown, and a tail)
    Harry Potter
    Kings
    Queens
    Princesss
Kid from Peter Pan (dressed in striped pajamas with a map on back)
Indiana Jones (not sure if there are books on him-LOL!)
    cowboys
    mermaids
Captain Underpants (use your imagination here)
Diary of a Wimpy kid (regular kid clothes)

I admit I cheated on this one last year. Daughter's KIndy announced character day on less than one week's notice, and we did Princess Tiana because a) she had the dress b) they had read the book in class. I hope you and DS figure something out. One of DD's classmates last year had written her own bedtime story, so when she came to school, they had to take her word for it that this is how the character would dress.

An easy one would be Ramona from Ramona & Beezuz. I read all the Beverly Cleary books when I was little--the books were written in the 60s.

my boys have worn their football jersey and checked out a book at the library for that team. For example, ds wore a Chargers jersey and the book was about the San Diego Chargers, but there are several books on football in general which would have worked.

My nephew was Where's Waldo for Halloween. It was AWESOME! They used white duct tape to make a red sweatshirt striped.

Last year DD dressed up as Laura Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie.

You could also do Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. We just read that book.

**Oops I just realized you have a boy. These characters probably wouldn't do. LOL
