In Texas, they were sugar ants and they would bite. Here in IN, dh calls them odoriferous ants (smell sweet when you squish them) and they don't bite, thank goodness. But, man, we've been battling them lately!! Doesn't help with the baby that crams too much of a bite in her mouth, grabs a tissue, spits it out and leaves it on the floor where no one sees and I find it a crawling black mess in the morning (from the ants that discovered it overnight). Ugh!!
Dh has sprayed a lot, as best he can, and still be safe for the children. I think we've found a couple of areas he can hit again, though.

We have that problem every spring too. We thought it was because we had peonese (sp?) in the backyard, which needs ants, but we dug those out last fall and still have the problem this year. Seems like it's bad for a few weeks and then gets better. Dh is gonna work on it here but who knows... Definately food, etc will make it worse so just keep things cleaned up the best you can!

I spray around the outside of the house a few times a year. I noticed a lot of them outside, so I need another spraying. I usually battle them when it starts to warm up, throughout summer, and at the first rains in the fall.

We have spiders, not ants... and not the cute little ones. The ones that are so big you want to go running out the door...

Yes, the kids are familiar with that song, too! I tell them the ants aren't marching one by one, they're marching ten by ten!! lol

My DH used something called Andro, I believe it was, last year outside (it was granules) and it helped alot. Inside, I used...baby powder. It was messy, but it really helped deter them from places I didn't want them to go. They follow a scent trail that they leave and the baby powder throws it off. I know it sounds crazy, but for example, I put it around the legs of my dining room table and it kept them off of it...I know it worked because I vacuumed it up after a couple of weeks and they were right back on the table the next day. A little messy, but much safer than sprays inside.

We had a horrible problem with the little buggers and the ONLY thing that actually got rid of them was this stuff: http://www.terro.com/products.php?pr...uid_ant_killer
I found it at a local Ace Hardware. You put it in the path of the ants and they crowd around it and eat it. It takes a couple of days but it totally gets rid of them. We'd tried absolutely everything before we discovered this stuff and nothing else worked. The trick is getting them to ingest it and take it back to the mound to get rid of them. So you will have to live with ants traipsing through your kitchen for a few days before they'll be gone.
The good thing about this product is that the active ingredient is Borax, which is basically non-toxic. So you're not spraying poison all over your house (which I wont do, we don't even have a can of insect spray in our house).
Good luck, I know how totally aggravating an ant infestation can be!Sara
