What causes bright red outer ear?

My 7 year-old son's outer ear has turned bright red this evening. It is warm to the touch, it is not swollen and he has no pain. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? What would cause it.

    Thanks for any input.

Has he been out in the cold? wind? My son does sometimes get like that before an ear infection or cold. He will also get round red circles on his face when he is fighting something off.

That happens to my son all the time. I will be watching this thread to see what people have to say. I have no clue why it happens but on my ds it goes away after awhile.

When your ear turns red like that, it means someone is talking about you...

This is helpful. Doesn't seem like something to worry about.... unless I don't want people talking about my son

I've seen it too on my kids. It doesn't always precipitate an ear infection, but it can.

Happens to me a lot. I even posted about it here once cause it was driving me crazy! One ear gets hot, nothing else ever happens and it goes away in an hour or so. Annoying but nothing to worry about I dont' think. lol

It's a common occurrence for my ds when he has a fever. That's the first sign of fever for him.
