Has anyone ever heard of a "flea shot" for dogs?

My mom has a new puppy & someone told her there's an actual shot to prevent fleas you can get at the vet. She's called all the vets around here & no one offers it or could give her any info.

    Now she's got me curious.

Has your dog ever gotten a shot for fleas? Is there such a thing?

    Thanks for any info!

I've only treated my dogs with Advantage, and I've never heard of a shot either.

Beware of any of the cheap flea treatments you can get at Walmart/Target...they can be very dangerous. A friend of ours is a vet and he's had several clients lose their pets after using them.

Hope your mom enjoys her new puppy!

I think I got it one year and the next the vet said they are no longer doing it. But I can't remember why.

I don't know about dogs, but I have gotten a shot for my kitties several years. One of them has an allergy to the products in the topical oils, so this has been our choice. It "sterilizes" a flea that bites the animal so they cannot reproduce but does not kill them. For short term killing of fleas, ask for Capstar. It is a tablet you give the animal and it kills the adult fleas on the animal in about 20-30 mins. You can actually see where they fall off where the animal was sitting or laying. And Capstar can be used for cats & dogs.

I'm in Canada but my BIL bought a Rottweiler a few years ago from breeder, which I wish that he would have researched better(it turned out to be a puppy mill ).

Anyways, of course the puppy was completely full of fleas and the vet gave him a shot because it was so bad and he had to take the puppy back in 4 to 6 weeks for the 2nd shot and it cleared them right up. He didn't need to go back every again.
