How long can you keep unopened cereal?

My kids go through cereal like mad! Kroger is having a sale where if I buy 10 mix or match items, I can get boxes of cereal for $ .50/box. I also have some coupons for like $ .55/off a box, so I'd end up with some for free. I wanted to get like 20-30 boxes, and I know they go through it fast, but not sure THAT fast. Anyone know how long I can store unopened boxes of cereal?

Buy 30 boxes as long as it's the kind your kids will eat. I stocked up on 15 boxes and those were gone in a blink of the eye. The only boxes left from that are the funky flavored frosted mini-wheat ones that dh bought from the same sale.

Unopened cereal stays good for a long time.

ETA: The most recently bought cereal I have in my cabinet expire in Feb 2009 and May 2009.

The use by date is on top of the box. It should be almost a year out from now.

Do you have a Big Lot near year home. They often have cereal for only $1.00 a box because the sell by date is only a month or few months away. If the cereal and other food is nearing the expiration date the food companies sell it to Big Lot and they cell it for next to nothing.

I think food banks will use it for 6mo-1yr after the expiration date.

    Hi

It will last for a year and still be good.

I buy certain types of cereal and stock it up and it turns out great and also, our church food bank will keep cereal for a year too.

    Have Fun

Actually food banks have various rules State by State, we are allowed to distribute it after the expiration date ONLY if we tell clients that is is past it's use by date.

That sounds like a great idea! You can keep unopened cereal for quite a while. Check the "use by" dates and get the ones with the latest dates possible.
