Brookstone has a lighted magnifying glass to use when reading books. I got my grandmothers husband one of these a couples yrs. back & he was closer to 90 yrs. old.

If he likes to play cards, we got my grandmother & her husband a deck of playing cards w/our family X-mas photo on the front of every card.

Books of stamps and a variety of cards for kids and adult birthdays, get well's, thank you's etc, so he always has a supply and can stay in touch with people via mail without having to leave the house.

My dad is 79 and he loves gloves and hats. He gets cold easily.

Was he in the marines or Army? A neighbor gave my dad a baseball cap that has Marines written on it. He loves it. He is so cute, he wears it all the time.

    He loves chess. Puzzles. TV.

The War by Ken Burns on DVD. This was a HUGE hit.

Cardigan sweaters with a zipper are his favorite. Easy to put on. I got my dad a cashmere one 2 yrs ago. He loved that.

Watches. Men never get tired of those.

80 one dollar bills. or 80 gold dollar coins.

My grandad is 87. We got him one of those watches that come on a chain and you have to keep them in a jacket pocket. He loved it. Gloves, hats, sweaters are always good. His night vision is not very good, so he keeps a small torch handy by his pillow. A mini-maglite is good.

Is he a young 80? Some 80 year old these days are more like 65 or 70. They still drive and get around. They still do lots of things. Others are not so lucky. If he has his health his gift will be different.

Lots of the older folks in my family seem to like chocolate covered cherries. I used to buy the really expensive ones for my Grandmother. She would have never paid a dollar or more for each one! I think something small but thoughtful would be fine.

DH grandfather loved lottery scratchers and the chocolate covered cherries someone else mentioned. My mom bought her dad some really nice cashmere socks one year and he loved them.
