Spin off: Embarrassing or weird facts about your city or state

I'm loving how that other thread is going. Makes me want to travel. Everyone's got such great things to say about their state or city.

So, let's hear about your state or city's embarrassements.

    • Portland Oregon: Home of the legendary Tanya Harding
    • Courtney Love was raised right here in Oregon (sorry if you're a fan)
    • Weird law (found this one on the net - didn't check out the source): In Oregon it is against the law for bears to tear bark off of trees in tree plantations owned by lumber companies - something they do in the springtime to give them access to sap, for an energy boost after their winter's hibernation. The penalty for violating this insane law (the amount of damage done is quite minor, and it is after all the bear's forest more than it is our's) is death. Last year, 113 such violations were punished by this penalty, making Texas look like a birthday party for law-breakers by comparison

I'll add more later as I'm SURE there are plenty of weird Oregon facts.

NM has the highest road fatality rate anywhere it seems, is ranked one of the lowest (some years the lowest) in education and many other things, aliens landed here in 1947 apparently, no one thinks we're part of the United States, the town I live in is currently known for being involved in a lawsuit regarding our city logo (crosses - but the name of the town is Las Cruces which means "the crosses" in Spanish ), DH's and my alma mater was currently mentioned as a ridiculous item on the O'Reilly factor because the mascot was changed from Pistol Pete (which several other ag schools use) to a guy resembling the Marlboro Man... hmmm... if I can think of anything else I'll add it later

All I can think of right now is....
Did you know that here in Washington state, it is against the law to have sex with a virgin?
Now how is that for a weird law?
I'm certain there are others, but it's late and I'm off to bed.

Kuwait is the car accident and car fatalities capital of the world.

It is not required to wear seat belts or have airbags in your car (most cars that are manufactured for Kuwait do not have any airbags), BUT...you are required by law to carry a fire extinguisher in your car. Because if you LIVE through the flaming car crash, then you have to put it out! (I'm not joking!)

Oh...and carseats are totally optional over here. It is not required for children to be in carseats or belted in their seats. That is rather scary.

ETA: Kuwait is the richest country per national (Kuwaiti nationals, that is).

Alabama is ranked one of the top in the nation for having the most obese adults

Also a law on the books that's never changed (but not enforced) is that women's heels while downtown can not exceed 2" ....guess they were going somewhere with that one
