1st Period after D&C - What to expect?

Hi everyone,

I had a D&C 3 weeks ago...12 weeks pg. I am waiting on my AF to arrive....any ideas when it should arrive? We are anxious to try again. Also, will the flow be heavy? I am not sure what to expect. At my 2 week post op appointment, my RE did an ultrasound and said that I have "blood in my uterus." He says this should come out with my period. Anyone else have any experience with this? Is this why the period could possibly be heavy. My RE says this blood needs to come out before we can TTC. I would really appreciate your comments. Thanks

You might experience a number of things - you might get a bleed and that would be the blood you already have and that not be your period. Or you might get a really, really heavy period. Some people have their periods 4 weeks after and some longer - just depends. I have been told that the first cycle after a miscarriage usually will not have ovulation. A lot of doctors will say wait a couple of cycles before starting again. I think that the longer you were pregnant the more that the recommend that so your body can be at its best point when you get pregnant again and hopefully prevent another miscarriage.

Did they test your hcg levels down to zero? That should be done before you try again.

I am so sorry for your loss. I went crazy after my missed miscarriage. It devastated me so much and my body's overwhelming biological need to be pregnant again did not help the situation. Take some time to grieve for your loss (and your DH too).

We went and saw a counselor and that was the best decision we could have done (granted it was 6 months later when there were so many issues going on between us since we had not dealt with it properly) But you live and learn.

First of all, I'm very sorry for your loss and I hope you never have to go through that again.
AF came around 40days after my d&c. Because it was a complicated miscarriage (faint hb became no hb at 6 weeks but hcg kept doubling & no bleeding. d&c was performed at 11w), hcg was checked frequently to make sure it bottomed out, which it did before I got AF. I was told to wait out three normal periods before we tried again. We did and had a great outcome as we became pregnant with DD the first month back to TTC.
I needed that time to grieve and to get my head straight. The excess hormones clearing out of my body helped too.
I know very well how anxious you must be to jump right in and TTC again but your body and mind have just been through allot and you may very well need this time to recuperate.
Best of luck to you.
