Infertile & feeling overwhelmed

This is my first time posting but I just feel overwhelmed and hoping getting it out and hearing from people that are going through the same thing will help.

I am 39 (will be 40 on 11/11) and my partner is 28. We have been TTC since 9/06. In 8/07 we changed to a more pro-active OB-GYN (my previous ob-gyn's response was "just keep trying") my new Dr. ran tests on me and my partner, all with good results. I had an HSG 12/07.
We got pregnant 3/08 but unfortunately had an 8 week ultrasound that showed no HB so after waiting a week for a 2nd opinion, had a MC.

We began trying again in 9/08. In 12/08 my OB-Gyn gave me Clomid for 3 months with no positive pregnancy results so I was referred to an RE in 3/09.

After what felt like months of endless pre-testing, we finally began treatments. In 7/09--we did Clomid & Bravelle IUI. 8/09--we did Femara & Bravelle IUI. 9/09-- we did Gonal-F IUI. All resulting in BFNs.

After the 3rd BFN I just felt beat down in so many ways, emotionally, physically, financially. But I really wanted to try one IVF before taking a break because time is unfortunately not on my side with my age.

Well, my RE gave me the list of needed meds and they included 8 Gonal-F 900 IU pens. I have insurance that covers a large portion of the meds and the visits and procedures, however my prescription limit is 10k lifetime maximum. And I only have enough to cover 6 Gonal-F pens , if I switch to Follistim I could get 7 pens but it is still not the 8.

When I spoke with the nurse at my RE's office she said not to worry and we would 'figure it out'. But I am currently in a waiting period until next week when I have an appointment and can be very clear if there is any possibility that I will need that 8th pen I have no additional means to pay. After 3 IUIs and with this IVF, we have no additional funds to tap into.

I know there endless possibilities, I have read some RE offices have drug company donated meds, I may not need all 8, but right now I just feel sad that we may not be able to try this last round of IVF.

One other thing that makes it important for us to do this IVF now if we can, in mid November I can change my insurance and 're-set' my lifetime maximum one time. Based on the IVF schedule I would know if we were successful and if I had to change insurance, which I would prefer not to.

Any postive thoughts would be appreciated.

in the same boat

I know exactly how you feel - I'm feeling incredibly down right now after a getting AF yesterday following 2nd IUI. I'm 40 and am just feeling pretty hopeless. We do not have insurance that covers ANYTHING so the idea of doing IVF is currently out of the question for us financially since it would all be out of pocket. It's frustrating.

I'm currently struggling with postponing doing the 3rd IUI later this month. Has anyone skipped a month before and gotten positive results? Is it better to just keep at it month to month to month?

Hang in there and good luck with everything!

I could not even imagine doing it with no insurance! Although I have read about some of the places to get meds that seem to offer them at a huge discount compared to my pre copay rates with my insurance.

As for the taking a break I know I have read about people taking breaks and getting BFP. What kind of meds are you taking? Because I know with my age I think the Femara worked better than the Clomid. I wish you the best of luck!
