frustrated......septate uterus???Need some encouragement please!!
Hi,
I'm just starting this thread to get some advise & maybe some success stories. I was dx with blocked tubes, Had surgery done to remove them and moved on to IVF. We had a textbook cycle with 4 of my 8 making it to blasts. The two we transferred were both 8 cell grade A blasts, The two we froze were 7 & 8 cell grade B blasts. Well to our surprise we had a BFN, I was shocked and devasted. When I first started all of this I was seeing my family doctor who mentioned that I may have a small septum in my uterus. When starting the visits with my RE this was one of the things I told him. His responce was that we were going to look at it when going for surgery, That was the last we talked about it at the time. Anyways after the surgery, Just b4 starting IVF I asked again about this septum, He told me not to worry because if I had this they would have saw it when we did Hys & Lap to fix tubes. I dropped it again and moved on to IVF. When I got my BFN I had a follow-up appt with RE to discuss why it had failed. I mentioned yet again about this septate uterus, He said once again that if I had this he would have found it b4 now. I didn't give up and demanded to do more testing b4 going on to my FET. Anyways, I had a sonogram & 3d u/s done this past Saturday and sure enough he found a septum, I was so angry. I feel like they ignored me and my concerns and now I am left with even more questions than I had b4. Well, My RE wants me to now go in for ANOTHER surgery to fix the problem, He says its a small one but he wants to fix it now to better my chances. It's going to be a few months of waiting for surgery appt then a few months to recover. So my FET will probably not happen until New Year. It's so frustrating! Has anyone ever had this? What did you do to fix the problem? Anyone have a successful IVF/FET after they fixed it. I'm sorry for babling on I just need someone to give me a bit of hope!

Hi! I am so sorry for everything you have gone through!!! I also had a uterine septum and wasn't diagnosed until we'd been TTC for 1.5 years - I had already done a few treatment cycles with an RE before I had the HSG that showed the septum. I had surgery to remove it, but it was unsuccessful (I had a big septum and a REALLY thin uterine lining so he was worried about puncturing the uterus). My RE then referred me to a specialist who was AMAZING!! I see you're in Brampton - he is in Toronto if you're willing to make the trip. His name is Dr. Leyland. He was able to remove the septum with no problems at all and I had a speedy recovery. We are still TTC (I'm currently in the 2ww) because I also have hypothalamic amenorrhea. I, like you, felt that the septum was one more thing that I had to go through which wasn't fair.
If you have a good surgeon it is a simple procedure. I wish you luck!! PM me if you need more info. Amy |

Thanks so much, I'll keep that in mind. My RE is amazing so the fact that he missed this shocks the heck out of me. The one I have is very small and my lining is excellent so hopefully I will not have any problems. Thanks alot!!

I also have a Septum, mine is muscular and apparantely it is harder to remove than a fibrous septum. Have either of you heard that before? My septum was fully diagnosed after an HSG, Ultrasound and an MRI.
I have had 2 mc so far and I was told the more times I get pregnant the higher my chances to carry would be. I have an appointment at the Fertility Clinic in a couple of weeks to discuss the Septum further, but my gyno feels that they won't remove the septum and will put me on progesterone. Any suggestions for me? |

Lesley - Im sorry about your 2 mcs. My septum was pretty big too. I think you need to at least have a laparoscopy to make sure it is a septum. It may be a bicornuate uterus (which you can only tell with a lap). If it's bicornuate it means your uterus is shaped like a heart (has a dip in the top), where if it's a septum, the top is normal but there's a wall in the middle. If it's bicornuate there's nothing you can do surgery wise. If it's a septum, I would definitely get a second opinion about taking it out.

Thanks for your reply. After my HSG the gyno was unsure as to whether my Uterus was Septate or Bicornate and that's why he had me have the MRI. With the MRI they were able to tell that it was Septate.
I'm going to the Fertility Clinic on the 23rd to discuss options further. My gyno said that they normally will not remove the Septum, but he did say that there are some younger, more aggressive Dr's there now that may do the surgery. My gyno told me that he has full confidence in the Fertility Clinic as they have one of the highest success rates in NA. He said my other option would be to go down to Colorado, but I think due to costs I`ll wait and see what the clinic has to offer. Unfortunately there doesn`t seem to be a lot of options on getting second opinions here in Calgary. |

MA - unsure of type
Hi LeslyM - I just got my ultrasound back with a dx of a possible septate, bicornuate, or arcuate uterus. I am hoping that my Dr. will refer me out for an MRI - but still haven't had a call from her since last week and dying to see what my next step is. My question is why they want you to go to Colorado - what is there?
Thanks CubbyFan |

Hi CubbyFan,
My gyno mentioned Colordado because he felt they had the next best Fertility Clinic if I was not happy with the one in my city. Because I'm in Canada, he wants me to try the one in our city first as Colorado would be very pricey for me. Good luck with your MRI, it is a pretty intense test, not painful, but stressful if you are claustaphobic. Take care, Lesley
