Ok... so my dh and I have been ttc for 2 years now and nothing. I have a 10yr old son from a previous, NEVER had any problem getting pg( just keeping one) tubes are open, uterus is normal....dh is fine.... but periods are SOOOOO irregular, it's not even funny!!!!!! I am thinking of going on the pill for like 6mos or so... to regulate them..... anyone think this is a good idea? My dr. seems to only care about the $, so no help there, but I don't want him to get me pg, only to lose it, when I obviously have a hormonal imbalance!!!! I know there are alot of women with more serious problems than mine... and I am SOOOOOOO sorry.... I just need some info please.....

Can you find a new doctor who will do a full fertility workup on you? The losses take on toll on you so if you have time to figure some things out, I say go that route. G'luck.

I don't think bcp will regulate anything. The bleeding that you get on the pill is not a real period - bcp works by primarily preventing ovulation - it's just withdrawal bleeding from when you stop the active ingredient pills. When I went off the pill, it took a good 6-7 months for me to get back to regular periods...and I was very regular before.
Were you always irregular or is this a recent thing? Various conditions can cause irregular periods -- endometriosis, you could be having issues ovulating regularly, hormone imbalance, etc. If you don't want to spend the money, you can try charting your bbt (basal body temperature). It'll at least indicate whether irregularity is due to ovulation issues. Hormonal issues can be detected by a blood test at the appropriate time (usually day 3) and shouldn't be expensive either. Don't have endo so don't know what's specifically involved in diagnosis -- probably a hysterosonogram or laproscopy, which is pricier. By the way, I think you can have your regular gynecologist run basic tests like checking hormone levels if the RE is annoying you. Get a new RE anyway. No reason to pay for crappy service or high pressure sales tactics.

Misha.... You are my age and we seem to have the same problem.... no explanation!!!! I have had an hsg (open and ready for biz) I have had hormone testing (normal) but that was like a yr ago when cycles were regular... I have one son and I've had SEVEN unexplainable miscarriages... I have NEVER had a problem getting pg... until now.... except that I have EVERY symptom for a hormone imbalance and a crappy fertility clinic that just will NOT listen to me.... what do I do??????

First things first, you're jumping the gum. DO NOT WASTE ANY MORE MONEY AT THAT CLINIC. It sounds like a place that bangs out IVF/IUIs for profit and is not interested in diagnosing you.
You should get your recurrent miscarriage and abnormal period problems diagnosed before you get treated for "infertility" (not sure you are since you apparently have no problems getting pregnant?). As you've had miscarriages, it obviously would be a waste of money to do an IUI or IVF cycle without knowing what is causing them. Miscarriages can happen, but I believe after three it's considered a medical issue and not just random chance due to things like chromosomal abnormality. Go back to your regular OB/GYN (you must have had one when you were pregnant with your son). He or she should be able to refer you to a real RE, probably working at a university hospital and not at a private clinic, who'll treat your underlying problems first. Also, some insurance will cover diagnosing of infertility (especially when worded as treatment for irregular periods), so call and confirm. Good luck. |
