Hey mom - we read that book for our book club a few months ago - we also read "Holes" and compared the two - since they were both on the summer reading list but fairly different in approach, topic, mood etc.

I didn't like The giver when I was in school and read it - I rarely liked any book we HAD to read even thought I loved reading. But now that I've read it again it is really good. I love introducing the idea on questioning "the status quo" to teenagers (like they aren't doing it enough already). Let me rephrase that I like the idea of introducing nessesary and important reasons to question things.

Anyway - its my turn to pick a book for the month of November and I'm having a hard time, I thought this bb would have some suggestions but apparently there's not much traffic...

Hey Em....yeah, this board is really slow.

Are you looking for books that are techinically "children's Lit" or just books in general? If you are looking for some younger lit....A Wrinkle in Time is a classic. Narnia Chronicles.....if you can't tell, I like that Fantasy Genre.

Adult books....The Gate To Women's Country is great. If you want Chick lit....Jennifer Weirner has 4 books...I have read 3 and they are good.

What type of book are you looking for?

Amy

Ok... had to check out this BB! DS who is almost 8 was an early reader and is an avid reader now in 2nd grade. He is tired of chapter books like Magic Treehouse, Boxcar Kids, Enclylpedia Brown, Captain Underpants, etc.. He liked these in 1st grade and went through most of the books in each of these series. He recently went through Diairies of a Wimpy Kid and all these Usborune books about electricity, power, forces, motion, etc....

DS does NOT like fantasy and prefers realistic fiction or non-fiction. It is easy when it's a chapter book in a series but I think he is beyond these so I am looking for individual titles of books appropriate for a 2nd grader reading at a 3rd? 4th grade level? I am not sure of the level if it's not listed on the back or it's not Scholastic. He recently whipped through Mr. Popper's Penguins. I figured it's a Newberry Honor so it had to be good. He LOVED it!!! His cousins who are almost finished college and went to the same school said he would love The Giver. I said "You remember what books you read in 2nd grade?" I surely don't.

So throw me out a list of books for a 2nd grader reading at least 1 or 2 grade levels above.... maybe 3rd or 4th grade level? Tell me about The Giver.

Personally, I think that The Giver is a bit mature for second grade. Probably closer to the 6th grade level.

If he likes realistic fiction....does he like historical fiction? There are tons of books in that genre that he may enjoy. Think Little House On The Prairie....but for boys.
