Giving Prevacid to an Infant
For those of you with little babies who take Prevacid, how are you giving it? We are using the Solutabs, and I dissolve them in her bedtime bottle with formula and rice cereal. Sometimes she does not take the entire bottle so she doesn't get the full dose. I have tried shooting it into her mouth with the syringe, with or without a nipple attached, and most of it ends up on me. Anyone have any ideas?
TIA! Megan

I put it in a syring with luke-warm water. I put it in his mouth very slowly, so he has lots of time to swallow. My 10-month old has been on Prevacid for several months, and has come to love his Prevacid. He gets excited when he sees me get the syringe out.

My DD went on prevacid at 9 months, but for some reason I had trouble with the solutabs dissolving. We ended up switching to capsules and sprinkling it on apple sauce. Not really an option for you.
What we did previously with the prilosec (which my dh tasted and said was terrible) was to put it in a bottle with one ounce of formula when she first woke up. Unless your dr. told you otherwise, you might want to try giving it first thing in the morning. You know she will be hungry and drink it. Then we waited 20 minutes before giving her a full feeding. Good luck!

Thanks for the information! I tried giving it to her tonight in the syringe, and got all the way to the end when she projectile vomited all over me, her, and her swing. It was lovely. So I guess we are back to the bottle/formula method for now. She did take her bottle well after her bath, I think she was exhausted from throwing up.
Thank you again! Megan |

Our prevacid is a compound that the pharmacy disolved for us...I use a cross cut nipple (so it flows faster) and slowly empty the syringe into the nipple and she swallows it directly from the nipple, as opposed to from the syringe "hidden" in the nipple like they showed me at the hospital. This way she is sucking from a nipple like she is use to instead of being squirted by the syringe.

We used the solutabs for probably 6mos until dd was well enough to go off meds. Previously she had been on Zantac which was yucky tasting and so had to be mixed with formula and the powder form of prevacid which was much thicker and sweeter than the solutab. So the solutab was the answer for us and she loved the fruit (strawberry?) taste. To administer it we put 10mls of water and the solutab in one of those devices with a nipple attached to a small cup. It is made by Munchkin and we enlarged the nipple hole somewhat - I have seen them sold at drug stores such as Longs. She would suck it down and never spit up. Also we gave it to her in the morning at least 30 mins before food as recommended by the ped GI. These meds work best on an empty stomach. Good luck!
