Question Please Please Help Us!!!!

I did a yahoo search for my question and came across an old thread on this site that dealt with this topic and I wanted to know if anyone could help.

My husband and I have been trying to conceive from over 2yrs now. I have gone through the fertility clinic at Kaiser Hospital. Every time that I have gone their only opinion/treatment is for me to lose weight. My last visit back in May 08 it was suggested the only way for them to give me clomid to treat my PCOS I would have to get back to the original size I was two years ago when I started the whole process. Can they continue to deny fixing the irregularity in my body for this reason? How was it unsafe for them to treat me then and now safe for them to treatment if I just get smaller than I am now?

My question is can this hospital not fix a family problem of PCOS because I am overweight? I have never had bad sugar level or high blood pressure even at a size 24/26 so why do they feel they can not treat me. Please help this has been they most stressful situation in the world. I don’t understand how to lose weight when my body is stressing.

continued.....

I did leave off that I was prescribed Meridia 5mg along with Metiformin. I was told that the Metiformin would hopefully make me so sick that I would not want to eat and start losing the weight. This was told to me by my Ob gyn doctor also by the RE doctor. I want a child so much that I took the pills which did exactly that. I vomited most of the day and so sick I stopped eating much. Now that has contributed to another 5lbs gain. I can not believe this was the advice from a doctor. Too go hungry and lose weight. I just don’t understand how this is any healthier for me opposed to them helping me get pregnant. Please Please someone give me some advice or an attorney :>)

Man I have heard this before. So many times. I guess your magic number is 50lbs. If you lose 50lbs you'll magically be able to use the medication to get pregnant. (jerks)

I was on Met with no reason other than PCOS and TTC. I lost NADA. I was on it for over a year with 2000mg...4 pills...I can't remember how much that was. I hated that drug. It did NOTHING for my periods either. With that being said...I think it worked well when I was using other fertility medication...clomid and repronex.

My advice would be to call around and get another dr. Before you even make an attempt to see another dr...call them and ask if they deal with plus size/ overweight women. Most of the time they will say yes and then you can give them a little backround on what's going on with you.

I have heard dr's say...starve. Your body will eat the fat. Don't eat past 4 pm and you'll lose weight. Well.... :p on them! I personally am comfortable with my weight and I wanted to get pregnant...not lose weight. If I wanted to lose weight...I would have went to someone else. Not an RE. Grrrr.

I just wanted to let you know you are not alone. There are so many drs out there that can't look past the fat.

My advice would be not to waste any more time with this hospital and fertility clinic. Infertility is stressful enough without having to worry about begging your doctor to give you treatment. Don't focus on whether what they are doing is fair or not, or if they can do what they are doing. The fact is, all of us women who have struggled with our weight know that it isn't fair no matter how you look at it. I wouldn't waste my time and money at a clinic that doesn't give me the same respect and treatment that they give to thin women. You need to find a doctor who will give you the best treatment possible for your fertility issues. I had to see three RE's before I found one who did not make an issue of my weight. The first one told me to lose 50 lbs (that magic number) and then come back and see him. The second one told me he would do IVF, but continued to make an issue of my weight. The third RE is the most wonderful doctor I have ever seen. He has treated me with nothing but respect and compassion and has given me wonderful care for my infertility issues. He has even studied Obesity and Pregnancy and still feels comfortable treating me (I am just over 280lbs). He never brought up my weight in our consultation...I had to bring it up! My RE has one of the highest success rates in my state and charges less than any other RE I have ever seen, and he treats overweight women. They are out there...you just have to keep looking until you find a good one who will give you the respect and medical care that you deserve. Good luck!
