BMI too high for IVF
I found out last week that I can't do the 1st round of IVF because my BMI is too high.
2 months ago I prepped for 1 round of IUI and didn't produce any good size follicles. For the 2nd round the med dosage was higher and I had a really nice size follicle but the IUI failed. We have severe MF and I have always had a regular cycle until this year. When I had the IVF consult 2 months ago the RE told me I had to lose 20lbs and that it was the anesthesiologist's rules not his. He's a little overweight and says he understands how hard it is to eat right. Anyway I've been kicking myself for not getting on a diet as soon as he told me to lose the weight. Now we're losing a month or 2 until I can get the BMI down. I feel like calling around to other clinics and ask if they have a weight restriction but I don't want to start from scratch. Plus I really like my RE and the entire staff. DH & I started Atkins on Saturday and so far so good. I was on it a few years ago and lost a lot of weight. Why oh why didn't I just start dieting & excersizing 2 months ago!!!

I have been told something like that before but I would just ask for a different anesthesiologist. I know I dont know your entire story but good luck. I am going to do Medfast before I move to IVF. I hope Atkins goes well for u. It seems we are always waiting for something with this IF crap. Takecare

HUGS and good luck Nena you know what they say hind sight is always 20/20!
I hope you get the weight down in no time and you are off to an amazing cycle! I know what you mean about the wanting to find another RE but you are going to run into the same issue. My RE here is MD says "Generally, the BMI of less than 40 is desirable for safety reasons" -rolls eyes- I had my gallbladder out few months ago with this weight and I had ZERO problems. |

My BMI is 49 and my RE has never mentioned anything about not doing an IVF for us. We aren't to that stage yet but I would think that doing the consult he would have mentioned me bringing down my BMI. I just had a hysteroscopy to remove a fibroid and a couple polyps and it was performed by him. Nothing about my BMI was said except by the anesthesiologist. They were going to perform the procedure at another surgery center but that one wouldn't allow it because of my BMI so my RE's office rescheduled me at another surgery center that didn't have a problem with it.
I say be an advocate for your care and tell them you want a different anesthesiologist. |

Thanks for the responses. I have been dieting like crazy and completely cut out sugar and carbs (except for the ones in vegetables). I dropped 10 lbs which puts me at BMI 40. I am going to call the RE's office tomorrow and ask him what other options I have. THanks again
