Hi all,
I'm having a devil of a time finding an RE who is willing to work with me because of my weight. I'm 36, turning 37 in Oct., 5'8 and 311. I had a tubal many years ago and so need to use IVF to get preg. Can anyone please give me the name and location of the RE you used? I've been calling around and getting lots of "no" answers. Thank you so much! without wax, AnnieCloud

Hi Annie,
I'm in CA, so I don't know how much help I'll be. But, I have a fabulous RE here who hasn't mentioned my weight at all. PM if you want the info. Good luck, Melissa P.S. Do the clinics outright say "No"? Because if they do, I'm absolutely flabbergasted.

I live in Mass, so my RE probably won't be a help to you either. But he has never made mention of me weight either. He hasn't even suggested that could hinder my sucess.
It stinks that because some of us are a little "flufflier" than others, we get can treated so poorly by some doctors. |

Hi Annie,
We have some fairly large patients that I have seen at Ohio Reproductive Medicine in Columbus, Ohio (and I'm no small flower myself). If you're willing to travel, I think they can help you. They do not believe that weight plays a role in infertility and they do not put you to sleep for egg retrieval. I know it sounds barbaric at first, but that gets you around the anesthesia/weight issue that many doctors have. I've gone through ER both awake and asleep, and I actually prefer being awake. I like to know what is going on, help "egg" the doctor on to get all the eggs (since my right ovary is hard to reach and many doctors give up without trying), and it really doesn't hurt that much. They give you a cocktail of pain meds, a local, and really, it isn't bad at all. I've done it awake 5 times now (I think I'm addicted to IVF), and I'm not at all concerned if I have to do it again. (I have had one success, so I'm not all failure!) At Ohio Reproductive Medicine (ORM), I would specifically recommend Dr. Williams. He has the best bedside manner, is very helpful, and will listen to what I prefer. If you want to see a note with the experiences of another larger woman who came to ORM last month after being turned down by her local clinic, PM me and I'll send you a link to another site with her comments before and after her first visit. Their number is 614-451-2280. Rather than talking with the receptionist, you might try x115 which is Dr. Williams' private nurse's line (Nancy). Leave her a message and I'm sure she'll give you a call back with his "weight philosophy". If you do end up interested in this practice, I can give you a lot more detailed information about how they work and how to best work with them. Msred P.S. They have slightly above-average stats, a decent out-of-pocket price (not the lowest, though), and keep your number of visits to a reasonable number. AND, they stay ON SCHEDULE for all appointments (Dr. Williams apologized profusely when he was 20 minutes late seeing me once). It makes cycling so much easier and more pleasant. |

I'm not sure where you live but you may want to try http://www.fertilityjacksonville.com/ in Jacksonville, FL.
They have great numbers and and very caring. I weigh only 50 lbs less than you and they have never told me to lose weight. I am currently in the middle of IVF# 2. Any doctor there is great. I, personally, prefer Dr. Freeman's bedside manor. |

Hi AnnieCloud: Would you be willing to travel to do a cycle? The doctors I go to see people from all over the world, and many of them stay in NJ while going through their IVF cycle. It's probably a big added expense, but just thought I'd suggest it. The facility is called Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science (IRMS) at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston NJ. I am overweight and they have never commented about my weight at all. I have also seen many other overweight women in the waiting room as well. Good luck to you!

Annecloud.... do NOT go to FIRM in Jacksonville. I have the exact age, weight and height stats as you and DH and I spent $11,000 on TESTING at FIRM just to be told 'go have your stomach stapled and come back after you've lost 60 pounds!
However, I have personally spoken to a doctor in Orange Park Florida who told me he would take me at the weight I am, no problem. He charges $8,500 for an IVF cycle, a 10% discount for those without insurance coverage for it and another $1,500 for ICSI. Call Dr. Shaykh at 904 278 6837 Or look it up at assistedfertility.org |

These RE's are great. Among the highest success rates in FL and the country! IVF #1 was a BFP for me and I'm overweight too.
