What is Working????

Well I'd love advice on what is working. Right now, I want to go back to the healthier diet, but it's hard. I want so badly to lose weight FAST and not wait or work for it. So, I get tempted by things like Atkins and Slim Fast. BAH. I suppose the only way to lose the weight is the slow method, but I'm not a youngster anymore. Age is about as trying as weight.

The Zone isn't that bad. Not as restrictive as Atkins. It's balancing protein, fat and good carbs. Easy to stick to. Weight comes off pretty quickly. Book makes sense, recipies are easy. Google it! Good luck!

I have not posted in quite some time, taking time off to finish my BSN and lose some weight. I know I have had to become serious with myself. It is in all of us to lose the weight, just do it for yourself. This summer I was watching "The Fat March" and a guy who was 485 lbs said if you can start with five steps, then the next week increase to ten, it doesn't matter, just do what you can and increase with each week. I started crying and was tired of being mad at myself and God. I got up the next morning and got on my treadmill. The machine and I have had a love hate relationship. I have loved to hate it, but since seeing that show, or try watching the Biggest Loser, the people on these shows are inspirational to me. They have given me the courage to lose about 29 lbs since the beginning of Sept. I have lost many inches and am down from 198 to 169 this am. Please don't give up!!! If you can only walk in your neighborhood, or join a gym, get a support system to keep you motivated. If anything, try taking a break from the baby spectrum, it will take some pressure off of you. I went through a major depression after being diagnosed with our infertility and packed on 45 lbs in one year. It is hard coming off, but when you see it, you will try even harder to get rid of the rest. Good Luck!!: )

I have just started being serious about this and I have found water aerobics to be really fun. It doesn't feel like working out at all and because it is a "class" it is easier for me to stay motivated to go.

Otherwise, I use an online calorie counter and try to limit my sweets/processed carbs. I've lost 3 pounds in the last couple weeks, which is not as fast as I would like, but I am seeing a difference in my body and I feel a ton better.

I HAVE to lose 20-30 pounds before the next IVF, so I have a little external motivation.

That's great!! The slower it comes off, the longer it will stay off as long as you keep working at it. I just keep the face of my aerobics teacher in my head and would feel guilty for skipping class. (I work with her!!) Good luck. I know how hard it is, I had to lose the thirty lbs for one RE for ivf and 45 lbs for the other group. I know how you are feeling, as I am only 5 ft tall, so any extra weight is noticable and makes that BMI go up!!

I started out by cutting back on my carbs, less than about 125 gm per day. The one thing I have continued is starting out my day with 60 gm of protein. I get that by drinking a protein shake for breakfast and I exercise alot. It took me many months to get where I am, I had to come to terms with all that goes with the infertility. "The only way you will ever have a 'natural' child with your husband is through ivf." It is alot to swallow. I learned to accept myself and not be myself up if I had a piece of chocolate, I just spend more time on the treadmill, and make sure you have a loving and patient husband.
Good luck

I drink a protein shake called Designer Whey. I was told about it by a coworker, I don't know where you live, but I can buy it at a grocery store named Harris Teeter, or try Vitamin World, it's a store similar to GNC. In one scoop of the shake, you get 18 gm of protein and 1 gm of carb, with about 100 calories, it takes like a chocolate shake to me, but only get the chocolate, the vanilla is YUCKY!! If you are going to replace breakfast with a protein shake, it's not healthy to use just a replacement bar for lunch, try taking your lunch, I take a South Beach wrap meal and eat half of that, blueberries with low carb yogurt and a pear or try celery with peanut butter. When I started I had to have the same meal everyday or else I got confused

I really like the shake. I am a nurse who works in a surgery center and work the craziest hours. I start work at 5:30 in the am, so I usually drink it about three or four in the morning, it lasts until about 10:30, sometimes until 11 which is my lunch time. I wish you good luck with it.

The sugar is the energy you will need to exercise. Sorry if I am butting in, I am new to this board...

My meal plan & exercise resolve came from last Christmas, when my mom took me shopping and the only jeans I could fit into were size 26. I weighed 268lbs. I cried like a baby. I made a plan, and stuck to it. THIS December 27, I am 62lbs lighter and a size 14.

The trick is to find what EXERCISE works for you, and then build your meal plan around it. You must be eating enough FOOD every day to let your body know that it isn't starving; because then it will "hold on" to every calorie you eat and you won't lose ANY weight. You have to stick with your meal plan, exercise every day (do SOMETHING active every day) and remember that there IS a light at the end of the tunnel. I personally don't feel that Jenny Craig or Nutrisystem really WORK because you have to TEACH YOURSELF how to cook healthier meals, in healthier correct portion sizes, and you have to know how many YOU need to be eating per day. If you know the answer to that question, you no longer NEED Jenny, etc. because YOU can do that for yourself at home.

There is NOTHING wrong with losing one pound or two pounds a week - sure, I'd LOVE to have lost the full 100lbs in a year, but we lost my dad unexpectedly in August, and I kind of fell off the wagon with my diet and exercise while running back and forth to the hospital to see him and see his doctors, etc. I also have a strenous workout schedule, and I've built MUSCLE which is heavier than fat. I run 4mi 4x/wk, and lift weights 2x/wk. But I don't have a full time job, and my younger children are in school 3 days/wk, so I might have more free time than other people. But I wouldn't trade what I've learned about myself, and about my own STRENGTH for all the money in the world.

I so feel you when you say you had a love/hate relationship with the treadmill. I got mine on the advice of a marathoner (my skinny best friend - hate her! Just kidding!) and I was scared to death of this thing. I would walk a mile, and at 262lbs, that ain't no small feat. Finally SHE told me it was time to start running, and I got a podcast called "Couch to 5k" and just DID IT. Each week the run times increased, and now I'm a RUNNER. 4mi is NOTHING for me to run, and I'm training for a half marathon in April.

Every meal is a challenge you can win, every day is a success that you can measure, every day is an improvement you can see and feel. You can do it. I'm not done doing it, and we can all do it together. Success in numbers!!
