This gives me hope. I am scheduled for egg removal on Wednesday. I have 11 follicles, all the in the 16-20 range right now. My uterine lining is thickening. Everything is looking positive.

To compensate for my weight, my doctor gave me a bit more hormone treatment than most. I was on 375 follistim for 10 days and 2 vials of menapor for 5 days. My follicles were growing a bit slower than most but everything is normal now.

I am now achy and bloated and tender and the doctor likes to hear that!
Hello scubanut2004
My name is Paula and new to the forum and new to IVF. I still have not started my treatment, I am actually at the very beginning still waiting to start my birth control pill, that is how behind I am. Would you be able to explain this to me? You indicated that you have 11 follicles, all the in the 16-20 range. Is this good? Should I pay attention to these numbers.
Thank you
Paula

IVF and overweight

I started out with 8 follicles, then it increased to 9. At my last ultrasound before the egg retrieval, I had 11 follicles. 2 were hiding LOL

Had my egg retrieval yesterday. They put me under and I didn't feel a thing. Turns out that all 11 follicles contained eggs which was quite a nice surprise for us.

I was cramping afterwards but the doc gave me darvocet which cured that achy feeling and I slept practically all day yesterday.

This morning, I got a call from the RE - 10 eggs were matured enough to fertilize yesterday. This morning, we have 7 embryos so 3 didn't take. They are now letting nature take its course and I'm scheduled to have the implant on Saturday. At that time, we'll know how many embryos we are dealing with and at what grade they are (1-4 with 4 being the best).

At my age (41) and weight, I am pleased with the results so far. Now I just have to keep faith that I can carry. Never been pregnant so we are heading into unknown territory.

Hello scubanut2004,
That is great, Congrats!!!
I hope and pray, that I get a positive outcome as well. Sorry, for the question, but do you know how many are you planning to transfer. Hopefully, I will be able to transfer 2 unless the doctor says three and if there is enough we will freeze them .

Yesterday, before we knew how many would actually fertilize, the doctor said that he is aiming to implant between 3-5 embryos. Now that we know that we have 7, we have to wait and see how they develop and we and the doc will make a decision on Saturday morning, based on how well they develop. I'm hoping that we have a few that we can freeze for the next time, should we need it so I don't have to go through all stimulation again.

I am optimistic for all of you, and based on some of the comments I just want to suggest that your stories here anecdotally confirm what I was saying about being plus sized and doing IVF: weight really is not the issue. When PCOS causes weight gain, then fertility is compromised because of PCOS, not because of weight. When LH and FSH are not right, fertility is compromised regardless of weight. And, if the doctor administers and monitors dosages well, with a good understanding that larger people need larger doses, IVF can be successful, regardless of size (within reason).

Good luck to all of you, I hope your dreams come true.

I will add my 2 cents: I am 5'5" and 225 and was never told by my RE to lose any weight. On my IVF cycles I didn't get PG but that was a uterine issue not weight. I did 1 FET and got pregnant 11/2005 and have an almost 1 yr old daughter. I am getting ready to do IVF again. I was told that there is a BMI cut off with our clinic for anestistia reasons (they are a free standing clinic) and that I could do ER and ET at the hospital for that reason but it was my PCP that screwed up my height and weight. They had me 3" shorter than I am and 50 pounds heavier!!! So that was cleared up. We are doing IVF again and I am still the same height and weight I was when I got pregnant. I didn't gain during my pregnancy so that helped a lot.

I am overweight. I have tried a couple different RE's and the one I stayed with never mentioned my weight as an issue. I liked that because infertility is not just about weight. Weight does contribute to the problem, but for many of us, even if we lose all the weight, our infertility still exists just the same. You can get pregnant and have a child when you are overweight. I am proof of that!
